The School of Sport, Rehabilitation and Exercise Sciences (or SRES) provides cutting-edge, industry-led degree programmes that are driven by research excellence and real-world application. As an established, expanding school, SRES offers a wide range of high-quality taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses, postgraduate research programmes, and continuing professional development opportunities in sport and exercise science, sports psychology, strength and conditioning, sports performance and coaching, physiotherapy, and sports therapy.
When you become an SRES student, you will begin your journey to become a new breed of university graduate; a highly skilled, creative, imaginative and theory informed practitioner. You will reap the rewards from a blend of innovative and traditional teaching methods, such as lectures, virtual labs, flipped classrooms, practical workshops, interactive discussions, and role play. Your experiential learning will be enhanced by a variety of employment-ready and authentic assessments, including written plans and essays, in-situ observations, presentations, case studies, and practice portfolios.
You will also have the opportunity to take advantage of our exciting enrichment, placement, and study abroad initiatives, as well as our Performance Sport Scholarship, targeted at talented athletes competing at a regional, national or international standard.
The University of Essex has significantly expanded SRES state-of-the-art facilities for research and education since the opening of our new facility in January 2018 with further renovation in Summer 2021. We are a dynamic, research-active school, consisting of emerging and world-leading researchers with an international reputation for cutting-edge research.
Our four research clusters explore basic science questions alongside projects with strong societal impact. The groups have received funding from a range of prestigious organisations such as the Economic and Social Research Council, Academy of Medical Sciences, Leverhulme Trust, National Institute for Health Research, International Olympic Committee, World Anti-Doping Agency, Union of European Football Associations, Sport England, England Cricket Board, Royal Ballet, Rugby Football Union, British Heart Foundation and Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Charitable Trust.
We have an outstanding reputation for both education and research. We were ranked in the top 25 for Sports Science in the Times Good University Guide 2023, and 23rd in the UK for research power in sport and exercise sciences (Times Higher Education research power measure, REF 2021).
Whatever your path, you'll find an active and engaged community of sport, exercise and therapy professionals, who will help you develop the skills you need for your future.
