Excellence in education and research

Our three faculties oversee teaching, academic development and research in our departments and schools while developing strong partnerships with business and industry.

In the latest Research Excellence Framework we came top 20 in the UK for research excellence (REF 2014), with many of our departments and schools confirmed as amongst the best in the country.

Faculty of Humanities

Our Faculty of Humanities offers a unique, research-led student experience across a broad range of undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes.

Our Faculty's outstanding reputation for research was confirmed by the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, with Essex ranked in the top 20 for research excellence in Philosophy, and top 10 for research excellence in Art History (REF 2014).

Faculty of Science and Health

Students at our Faculty of Science and Health develop the skills to address global issues and benefit people, the environment and society. They are learning from scientists who are working on vital issues including the nature of ageing, the meaning of genes, the future of the internet and the survival of coral reefs and climate change.

Faculty of Social Sciences

We are rated 4th in the UK for our research excellence in social sciences with our politics research confirmed as best in the UK (REF 2014). Our Faculty of Social Sciences is home to some of the most highly-rated social science departments and research centres in the country.
