Winsten Day

The Winsten Day is a free enrichment event held annually in honour of Professor Christopher Winsten, an internationally respected probability theorist and former lecturer at Essex.

The event usually includes a series of interactive sessions designed to provide the opportunity to explore mathematical problem-solving more deeply and to expose them the wide variety of options available when choosing to study mathematics related subjects post 18. There will also be current Maths undergraduates to share their student experience. The day will conclude with the annual Winsten lecture. Previous Winsten speakers have included Joe Twyman, Director of Political and Social Research at YouGov, and Stella Dudzic, the 2012 Royal Statistical Society Lecturer to Schools.

Suitable for:

  • Teachers for Key Stage 5 (Students aged 16-18) can attend with their students and will have the opportunity to work on problems with their students.
  • Individual Sixth Formers (Enquiry not required to be through a school)

Details from this years event are as follows, including links to access the sessions on demand:

  • 1.15pm-1.30pm - Welcome talk
  • 1.30pm-2.10pm - 'Party hard! The Maths of connections' by Professor Colva Roney-Dougal, University of St Andrews
    Access on demand
    • How many guests need to come to a party, to guarantee that either at least five of them all know each other or at least five are mutual strangers? This question turns out to be surprisingly hard to solve, and has led to the creation of some maths that feels more like a newspaper puzzle than real work. We'll explore connections ranging from friendship, to marriage, to the spread of infectious diseases.
  • 2.20pm-2.50pm - Interactive session
Buffon’s Needle: The Mathematics of Dropping Things
    Access on demand
  • 3pm-3.20pm - Student panel: “University life and Studying Maths at university.”
    Access on demand
