The Essex Santander Access Bursary


The details

If you are a student from a UK School or College, you could be eligible to apply for an Essex Santander Access Bursary to support you in progressing into higher education. Priority will be given to applicants from one of our Schools Membership Plus Partner Schools or colleges..

The University, in partnership with Santander, is offering 30 bursaries of £1,250 each paid in your first year of study only.


To be eligible you must meet all the following conditions:

  • Have attended a UK School or College and completed your course in 2022.
  • Have chosen Essex as your firm choice by Friday 15 July 2022.
  • Register for your first year of study for a full-time undergraduate degree course at the University of Essex in 2022-23 starting in October 2022.
  • Have a household income of less than £25,000 – this will be assessed via your application to the Student Loans Company.
  • Have submitted a means tested application to Student Finance.
  • For the purposes of assessing your eligibility for the bursary, you and your sponsor (parents) must have provided consent to Student Finance for the University to have access to your household income details.
  • Submitted an application for the bursary no later than Friday 15 July 2022.

Students not eligible

The following students are not eligible for this award regardless of meeting the above criteria:

  • Students on Higher/Degree Apprenticeship courses.
  • Students with direct entry into the second year.
  • Students studying online distance learning courses.

How to apply

Applicants should complete The Essex Santander Access Bursary application form (.doc). This should be submitted no later than Friday 15 July 2022.

Where more applications are received than awards available, applications will be considered by a panel using the following criteria.

  • Preference will be given to applicants who have attended a Schools Membership Plus partner school or college and finished their course in 2022 (eligible schools/colleges can be found in Appendix A of the attached Terms and conditions.)
  • Applications with the lowest household income will be prioritised.
  • Where there are applicants with similar levels of income and a limited number of bursaries, the personal statement will be considered as part of the application process.
