Changes at Southend Campus FAQs

The Southend Student Compensation Scheme will be launching on Monday 2 March. An email will be sent to all students on the day with a link to the platform and guidance.

Background to our decision

The University of Essex is taking decisive steps towards a sustainable future by concentrating research and education on two campuses.

As part of the plans, the Southend Campus will close from summer 2026 with all courses moving across to the Colchester Campus.

Southend has played an important part in the University’s story, but focusing our teaching, research and student services on fewer sites will give our University a consolidated platform for the future and enable us to better respond to the needs of our students.

You can see a full announcement in our news pages.

These FAQs are designed to give you all the information you need about your studies this year and the transition to the Colchester Campus, including compensation arrangements.

These FAQs are for current students, applicants should go to the FAQs for applicants.

If you have any further questions not covered by these FAQs pleased email: studentfaqs@essex.ac.uk

Plans for the Southend Campus

When are you having more Q&As and information sessions for students?

We've organised Q&A sessions for students in December, January and February led by our Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education Professor Larra Anderson to give you the chance to discuss the issues that are important to you.

So far they've covered how we're supporting students, accommodation options and the compensation scheme. We will be organising more Q&As in partnership with departments. We'll email you to let you know about further Q&A sessions and you can also  check back here for more information. We would be really happy to organise future sessions about any issues requested by students.

Why is the University closing the Southend Campus?

The University of Essex is taking decisive steps towards a sustainable future by concentrating research and education on two campuses instead of three.

We are really proud of what we’ve achieved at our Southend Campus, but we are having to make exceptionally difficult decisions to support the financial sustainability of the University and respond to the challenges facing the whole UK higher education sector.

The decision to bring our activities together at Colchester and Loughton forms part of a broader effort to renew the University and safeguard our long-term sustainability.

Consolidating teaching, research and student services on fewer sites will help us reduce duplication, improve the way we use our facilities, and operate more efficiently at a time of significant financial pressure.

We hope students moving to our Colchester Campus from Southend will be able to more easily benefit from the full range of academic, social and cultural opportunities on offer.

You can see the full announcement in our news section

Will I be able to finish my course?

The Southend Campus will be closing at the end of August 2026. Nothing will be changing immediately and if you are due to finish your course by 1 October 2026, you will be able to complete your studies in Southend*. If you are expecting to continue your course with us into the next academic year, we will support you to transfer to our Colchester Campus to complete your course.

*Students on postgraduate taught courses that started in October 2025 may have to visit Colchester or Loughton Campuses on very limited occasions after August 2026 to fulfil supervision and visa requirements. We will provide further information to students affected by this.

When will the Southend Campus close?

The Southend Campus will be closing at the end of August 2026. If you are expecting to continue your course with us into the next academic year, we will support you to transfer to our Colchester Campus to complete your course.

What will happen to my placement?

Placements for students in the School of Health and Social Care will be continuing as normal and we are speaking to our partners to reassure them there will be no changes. We are committed to supporting placement provision in East 15 Acting School and Essex Business School.

I am currently intermitting from my studies. What will happen to me when I return to my course?

If you are taking a break from your studies at our Southend Campus and you are due to restart your course in the autumn term, your course will be based at our Colchester Campus. We will support you with all the information you need to transfer successfully and we are here to answer any questions you may have. Please contact our Student Services Hub if you have any questions.

Why weren’t we told before the start of this academic year?

The financial challenges facing the whole UK higher education system mean we have had to take the exceptionally difficult decision to close the Southend Campus to support the financial sustainability of the University. We told our staff and students as soon as we could. We are now focused on supporting you to transfer successfully to our Colchester Campus.

Why are you not offering a teaching out option for current Southend students after this academic year?

We have carefully looked at all options and feel the best approach is to transfer students where possible to our Colchester Campus to complete their studies, once the Southend Campus closes in August 2026. If you are due to finish your course by 1 October 2026, you will be able to complete your studies in Southend*. If you are expecting to continue your studies with us into the next academic year at the end of the 2025-26 academic year, we will support you to transfer to our Colchester Campus to complete your course.

In partnership with staff in the School of Health and Social Care, we have developed a blended delivery model for nursing courses. This is an example of how we’ve responded to student feedback. If further options emerge which we can take to mitigate the impact of the closure of Southend Campus on students we will of course consider them.

*Students on postgraduate taught courses that started in October 2025 may have to visit Colchester or Loughton Campuses on very limited occasions after August 2026 to fulfil supervision and visa requirements. We will provide further information to students affected by this.

Will it affect my visa if I have to move to Colchester Campus?

There will be no impact on your visa if you move to the Colchester Campus to continue your studies. If you have any questions, just contact us via askthehub@essex.ac.uk.

Are all courses currently taught at Southend moving to Colchester?

Yes. All the courses at Southend will be moving to Colchester.

Will I be taught by Southend staff next year?

Teaching staff will depend on which modules you are studying next year.

Will Southend students be sharing classes with students already studying at the Colchester Campus next year?

It depends on which modules you are studying. Some courses may have classes which mix current Southend students with current Colchester students. We are aiming to make sure you feel welcome on the Colchester Campus from the start and will be looking to give you the opportunity to stay in contact with friends from Southend and make new friends on the Colchester Campus.

Can I visit the Colchester Campus?

Yes. We are arranging opportunities for current Southend students to visit the Colchester Campus in partnership with your departments. We’ll keep you updated through your departments.

Discover more about the Colchester Campus.

The Colchester Campus will be too far for me to use the library and study spaces there on days when I do not have lectures. Will I have access to study spaces in Southend next year?

The Southend Campus is closing this summer and this will mean you will no longer have access to existing university facilities at the Gateway Building and The Forum. We are listening to students and reviewing options around how we can support you in the future.

Why can’t you rent different space in Southend to deliver our courses?

We are looking at many different options to make the transition to Colchester Campus easier and we’re keen to continue discussing these with students. At this moment we don’t think renting alternative space is a viable option as one of our priorities is to concentrate our educational offer on a smaller number of sites.

I am really worried about the travel to Colchester and being late for my lectures. Will this be considered?

We understand the university day at the Colchester Campus needs to work for students who are moving across from the Southend Campus and intend to commute. We are discussing different options with departments about the teaching day. As part of the Southend Student Compensation Scheme, we can look at what support might help you in relation to travel and childcare. Once you’ve transferred to Colchester, we will continue to do our best to support you and make sure that staff are supportive towards students who are getting used to new travelling arrangements.

I’m a postgraduate research student: will my supervisor be changing?

All current postgraduate research students will be transferring to Colchester after the closure of Southend Campus. The move to Colchester doesn’t mean your supervisor will change. However, the University does sometimes need to make changes to supervisory arrangements, so we can’t guarantee that your supervisor will remain the same for the whole of your studies.

We will be adopting our usual approach to any necessary changes to supervisory arrangements, which we use in cases where colleagues retire or leave the university. In these situations we work with you and your Postgraduate Research Director to identify suitable expertise within your academic department/school (or the wider University) to appoint an alternative supervisor.

In some cases (such as final year postgraduate researchers), it is possible to appoint the colleague who is leaving the University to an Associate Supervisor role, meaning they retain a co-supervisory role within the new supervisory arrangements.

We can assure you that we will work with you to identify a new supervisor if a change to your supervisor arrangements is necessary.

We’ll be in touch during the spring term to update you on our plans.

If I decide I don’t want to study in Colchester, what can I do?

We hope you feel Colchester Campus will be a really great place to continue your studies and we want to support you to do that, but please talk to us. We’re here to help you make the right choice and to successfully complete your studies.

You can contact our Student Services Hub via email at askthehub@essex.ac.uk, Live Chat or by calling +44 (0)1206 874000, You can also visit us on the 2nd floor of The Forum. Further information about our Student Services Hub is online.

We accept that transfer to Colchester may not be possible for some students. If you are in this position, please talk to your Student Adviser and we will work to support you with this choice.

The Southend Student Compensation Scheme will give you the opportunity to inform the University you are thinking of or have already decided to transfer to another university.

The timeline for moving to another university to complete your course is very different to when you initially apply to start a course. We will support you through the process and we will be reaching out to universities to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible.

What is the deadline for taking a decision on whether to stay at the University of Essex?

We want to make sure you have enough time to make informed decisions about your future.

In March, the Southend Student Compensation Scheme is opening and if you are thinking of or have already decided to transfer to another university, you will be able to use the online platform to tell us. As part of the process we'll ask you to tell us your intended destination institution and the course title.

If you receive this compensation option you will receive a £600 one off payment in recognition of any distress and inconvenience you may have experienced as a result of the change to your campus. You will also receive £400 per remaining years of study in recognition of the costs you may incur as a result of the change to your campus.

No evidence is required as part of the application process for this option, but we will ask you to tell us where you are thinking of transferring to. Your department will contact you to discuss your decision before a compensation offer is made.

We’ll provide support if you have questions or need any help with the process. If you need additional support, we will be reaching out to you and we’re happy for you to contact us to seek further assistance.

You can contact our Student Services Hub via email at askthehub@essex.ac.uk, Live Chat or by calling +44 (0)1206 874000, You can also visit us on the 2nd floor of The Forum. Further information about our Student Services Hub is online.

Finance

What about the financial implications of the transfer for me? What options are available to me?

From Monday 2 March, we will be launching the Southend Student Compensation Scheme, an online portal to help students apply for compensation.

We recognise that the transfer of your course to the Colchester Campus represents a change to what you were expecting. We are therefore offering £600 to students affected by this decision. You will qualify for this sum if you are currently registered with the University of Essex and would be expecting to continue your education on your current programme in the 2026-27 academic year, had this change not taken place.

In addition, we understand that transitioning to a new campus may also possibly lead to some increased costs such as in travel or accommodation.

To recognise this, we have prepared different options which respond to the needs of different students who want to continue their course at our Colchester Campus or decide they want to switch to a different university.

Option One: For students currently living in University Square, we will offer guaranteed on-campus accommodation in Colchester at the same price as your existing Southend accommodation for the remainder of your current course. You will also remain eligible for the Returning Student Cashback. In addition, you will receive an Essex Sport silver membership, giving you access to the gym and sports facilities at the Colchester Campus.

Option Two: For students currently living in private accommodation in Southend who wish to relocate to Colchester Campus, we can provide a tailored on-campus accommodation package aligned to your needs and budget. This will include options comparable to your current rent, ensuring the move is as straightforward and affordable as possible.

Option Three: For students who don’t want to move to live on the Colchester Campus while they are continuing their studies with us, we are offering an additional £400 for each upcoming year of study on your current programme to reflect any additional costs as a result of the transfer. There will be no evidence of loss required for this option.

Option Four: If you don't want to study at Colchester Campus and want to continue your studies at another University, we will do our best to help you find a new place to study. We will also offer you £400 for each upcoming year of study on your course to reflect additional costs.

Option Five: If options one to three aren't right for you, we are asking you to tell us about your individual needs including any significant additional costs. These might be the costs of driving to Colchester, train fares, additional hours of child care or any other extra costs you are facing as part of moving across to the Colchester Campus. You will be able to detail all this through the Southend Student Compensation Scheme's online portal. The portal will allow you to upload evidence to support your application and we may need to talk to you to clarify your application but we want to help you find the right package to support you.

What if if I have individual needs not covered by options one to three?

We want to reassure you that we are listening to students and keen to identify ways to offer the right support.

You'll be able to use the Southend Student Compensation Scheme to explain your individual circumstances and will be asked to provide details to help us understand your needs and why the other options are not suitable. If you expect there to be a significant increase in costs due to the change of campus location, you will be able to use the online portal to let us know what these will be and will ask you to provide reasonable estimations of the value. For example, you will be able to include items such as travel, childcare and accommodation.

What if I decide I don’t want to transfer to Colchester, but want to continue my studies at a different university?

You will receive the £600 payment we are providing to students who are currently registered with the University of Essex and would be expecting to continue your education on your current programme in the 2026-27 academic year, had this change not taken place.

If you decide not to transfer your studies to the Colchester Campus and instead choose to study elsewhere, we are also offering £400 for each upcoming year of study on your course to reflect any additional costs. We will also work with you to support that transfer, both through guidance and assisting with the necessary transfer documentation.

The Southend Student Compensation Scheme will give you the opportunity to inform the University you are thinking of or have already decided to transfer to another university.

For more information and advice please email: askthehub@essex.ac.uk

Next steps

After choosing the option which works best for them, students will be asked to sign a short agreement reflecting their choice of options or decision on future study to draw matters relating to the transfer to a conclusion. The Southend Student Compensation Scheme opens on Tuesday 2 March and, we are encouraging students to start their application by Friday 1 May.

I’m worried that compensation payments will impact on my Universal Credit payments. What should I do?

If you have any concerns that compensation will affect your Universal Credit payments, please select Option Five when completing your application through the online Southend Student Compensation Scheme. This will give you the chance have a conversation with us about your individual circumstances.

Your tuition fee liability will remain with the University of Essex.

For undergraduates, your living cost support may change depending on your new accommodation and travel arrangements. Please update your term-time address with Student Finance England (SFE) so your maintenance loan reflects your new circumstances.

For the 2026-27 academic year, you will need to update your SFE application to the Colchester-based course. If you are unsure which course to select or need the SLC course code, contact the Funding Team at askthehub@essex.ac.uk.

To apply for funding for academic year 2026-27 when applications open in 2026, log into your SFE portal and follow the guidance depending on your situation.

Your Student Finance entitlement will stop from the date you officially withdraw, in line with the Student Loans Company (SLC) policy and the University of Essex Tuition Fee Payment and Liability policy.

For undergraduates, you may need to repay any overpaid maintenance loan or grant.

What happens to my Student Loans Company funding if I transfer to another institution?

Tuition fee support will be recalculated according to the new provider’s fee structure.

There may be a short delay in payments while your application is updated.

What happens to my NHS Learning Support Fund (LSF) if I transfer course from Southend to Colchester?

Your LSF will be unaffected as long as you progress in your studies. Your course will remain the same, so no change will be required. The LSF cannot be provided for repeat years of study.

What happens to my LSF if I decide to withdraw from my course and leave University of Essex?

Your LSF will no longer continue as you will no longer be in study. You will need to contact the NHS LSF team as soon as possible and (whether permanent or temporary) within one month of the event so that any future payments that may be due to you can be stopped. Your department will officially advise the NHS LSF team of your last date of attendance and you may be advised of any over or underpayment by email.

What happens to my LSF if I transfer to another institution?

You will still receive LSF funding if you transfer to another institution, provided you meet the eligibility criteria for the new course. You must inform the department who will update your NHS LSF account.

We are committed to covering the extra costs you might be facing if you choose to continue your studies at Colchester Campus. We want to talk through your personal situation so we understand how we can help you with things like travel, accommodation and childcare. When will I get the compensation payments?

There are different elements to the compensation. The £600 payment in relation to distress and inconvenience caused by the closure of the Southend Campus will be paid within four weeks of your acceptance of your compensation offer. Compensation which relates to travel and other additional expenses incurred due to the transfer to Colchester Campus will be paid when you register for the 2026-27 academic year in one payment (staggered payments are available if preferred upon request). We want East 15 to feel like they have a home and are a valued part of our community.

Is the Loughton Campus also closing?

No. The Loughton Campus is remaining open and will continue to offer its full range of courses.

Can I transfer to Loughton instead of Colchester?

No. Loughton and Southend offer different courses, and all Southend courses will be transferring to Colchester.

Where will our end of year performances be?

The Lakeside Theatre at our Colchester Campus is a 200-seat venue with a cafe-bar area.

Will there be a dedicated area of Colchester Campus just for East 15 students?

We’re creating new spaces for East 15 and we’ll be sharing further information soon.

I was expecting to transfer from Loughton to Southend in autumn 2026, but now I am transferring to Colchester – what are my accommodation options?

Students on the MFA programme who complete their first year at Loughton this summer will now transfer to the Colchester Campus for their second year in autumn 2026.

We have plenty of accommodation at the Colchester Campus and you will be able to choose your preferred option as part of the Compensation Scheme launching in March.

There is no hurry to confirm your choice as the guaranteed deadline for booking accommodation will be 11 September 2026

Information for Essex Business School students

My course is accredited by a professional, statutory or regulatory body – will moving to Colchester have any impact on this?

We’re in contact with all relevant bodies to inform them of our plans.

Are the facilities at Colchester Campus suitable for my course to be delivered?

Our Colchester home is a landmark building with excellent study facilities just a few steps away from our accommodation. Facilities include a state-of-the-art Bloomberg Trading Floor, a range of learning spaces, an on-site cafe and a stunning winter garden to work and relax in. We’re also part of the Knowledge Gateway research and technology park allowing us to create close links with the 50+ businesses based there and the many organisations connected to its programme of events. The nearby Innovation Centre is also home to our Essex Startups team and our business engagement team with the largest portfolio of Knowledge Transfer Partnership with companies in the UK.

You will be part of a larger community of Essex Business School students, allowing you to build wider networks and connections with other disciplines. We are also planning to extend our range of Work Based Learning projects to enhance students’ employability and practical learning experience through meaningful engagement with external organisations.

Other facilities close-by include the Albert Sloman Library, the Silberrad Student Centre, a range of cafes, restaurants and street food, the SU Bar, social spaces, the sports centre, a food market on Thursdays, the Lakeside Theatre and Wivenhoe House Hotel. You’ll also be able to benefit from the SU’s societies and clubs.

What will happen to my placement?

We are fully committed to maintaining our relationships with all current placement providers who support our Southend-based students. Your placement remains an important part of your learning, and we will continue to work closely with providers to ensure continuity and quality.

Will the location of my placements be changing?

Our aim is to keep all existing placement opportunities available. In some cases, you may also be offered additional or alternative placements that could support your learning and development.

My course is accredited by a professional, statutory or regulatory body – will moving to Colchester have any impact on this?

We are not expecting any issues and are in contact with all professional, statutory and regulatory bodies.

How will teaching and assessment continue for the rest of my course?

Courses taught at Colchester follow the same curriculum and standards as those delivered at Southend, but we want to be as responsive as we can be to the needs of students moving across from Southend. As a result a blended delivery model has been developed for nursing courses  in response to student feedback. If further options emerge which we can take to mitigate the impact of the closure of Southend Campus on students we will of consider them.

How will you protect the quality of my course in the spring and summer terms? Will I still have access to all the facilities I need?

Yes. You will continue to have access to the resources required for your course in the spring and summer terms.

If courses move to Colchester, will I be learning with students from both Colchester and Southend?

In some cases you may be learning alongside students currently learning at the Colchester Campus. This will offer valuable opportunities for interprofessional learning, collaboration, and sharing different perspectives and experiences.

What will the facilities be like at Colchester Campus?

Colchester Campus provides excellent facilities designed to meet the needs of all our health and social care courses, similar to, and in some areas more extensive than, those at Southend. All students across the University have access to high-quality learning spaces, specialist resources, and support services.

Are the facilities at Colchester Campus suitable for my course to be delivered?

Courses delivered at Colchester follow the same curriculum and uphold the same standards as those taught in Southend. The Colchester Campus also offers a wide range of facilities, many more extensive than those at Southend which we hope will provide students with additional opportunities and benefits including extra-curricular activities at the Colchester Campus.

Facilities on the Colchester Campus include the Albert Sloman Library, the Silberrad Student Centre, a range of cafes, restaurants and street food, the SU Bar, social spaces, the sports centre, a food market on Thursdays, the Lakeside Theatre and Wivenhoe House Hotel.

What are the benefits of being based in Colchester?

Being based in Colchester will support our work to be an important regional provider in health and social care areas while also building links with other disciplines within our Faculty of Science and Health including life sciences, sport and rehabilitation and psychology and other faculties.

We also hope students will benefit from better access to a more extensive range of facilities including careers, workshops, student societies and sports facilities. This will also enrich group learning and encourage more peer interaction.

I’m a Nursing student. I have contacted other universities about transferring and have been told I cannot. What can you do to help me?

We hope as many students as possible will continue their studies with the University and want to support you to do this. We’re working on arrangements for the nursing courses next year and will limit the number of days you need to be on campus as far as we can which we hope will make things easier.

However, we accept that transfer to Colchester may not be possible for some students. If you are in this position, please talk to your Student Advisor and we will work to support you with this choice.

The timeline for moving to another university to complete your course is very different to when you initially apply to start a course. We will support you through the process and we will be reaching out to universities to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible.
