The world in one place

We're the leading UK university for language and linguistics research (REF 2014). We're also the only UK university to offer MA Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling.

If you want to delve deeper, scrutinise and rigorously test the accepted thinking in language and linguistics, welcome home. We expect you to debate and engage with our research community, contributing to knowledge in the discipline.

Our research feeds directly into what we teach you in the classroom to ensure you have the best learning experience. Your classes are small so you benefit from intensive, personal teaching and throughout your course, you have access to our great facilities, including a state-of-the-art interpreting lab with equipment matching that of the UN.

If you want a global outlook, are interested in human communication, and want to study for a degree with real-world practical value in a world-class department, welcome to Essex.

One Masters not enough?

We offer a number of postgraduate taught dual awards with our international partners.

These awards are 1+1 progression arrangements where you work for two Masters degrees, one at Essex and another at a prestigious university across the globe.

Normally, a single Masters degree in Europe would take you two years to complete. Our dual awards allow you to gain two Masters in two years, a year less than studying them separately.

This unique opportunity gives you experience of different cultures, preparing you for an international career, or for a PhD. You also gain a competitive edge when applying for jobs once you leave Essex.
