Studying languages opens the door to a whole new world.

Modern languages
You want to travel the world. You enjoy discovering new cultures.

You thrive off the buzz of learning something new. At Essex not only can you reach mastery-level without any prior knowledge of a language, but you can also study several languages simultaneously. Develop your language abilities, cultural awareness and translation, interpreting and subtitling skills. Plus, study abroad and put your language skills into practice – the world is your oyster at Essex.

Why study here?
  • Study a language from scratch via our intensive route, we'll pay for you to attend a four-week summer school in the country where that language is spoken.
  • Gain greater communication skills across languages and cultures with our Language Expert modules before you study abroad.
  • Gain skills in translation, interpreting and subtitling, using the latest technology in our multimedia labs.
Ania's story

"I do Mastery Spanish and Mastery German. I also did Russian through Languages for All and I am a native Polish speaker and I have basic French. During my year abroad I also studied the Yucatec Maya language which was really interesting. It’s a language not related to anything I know and it’s amazing to see how people see the world. I'm actually writing my dissertation in Spanish about the Mayan languages."
