Teaching and the Faculty
  • Through our research-led teaching, our students learn how substantive knowledge about the world is created from a hunch and developed into credible research with well-supported findings.
  • As a University we are committed to excellence in education and in 2017 the University was awarded the highest rating of Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).
  • We are one of only three institutions in the UK to be awarded Q-Step Affiliate Status funded by the Nuffield Foundation, the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and Higher Education Funding Council.

Research and the Faculty

Our Faculty is home to some of the most highly-rated research centres in the country. We have a powerful group of scholars, asking critical questions and challenging convention through their world-leading social science research (REF 2014). From how best to govern ourselves, to understanding society and how we acquire language, to how we conduct business and interact with each other, we answer profound questions.

Here at Essex we work hard to support our academic community in creating links between research and policy makers. We work closely with a number of organisations and initiatives to ensure our researchers are best placed for impact. These include; the Industry and Parliamentary Trust (IPT), the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST), the Knowledge Exchange Unit, the Open Innovation Team (OIT) and the University Policy Engagement Network (UPEN).

If you would like to discover more about the research centres and projects housed within each of our teaching Departments. You will also find links to some of the most prestigious case studies produced by members of our Faculty along with a booklet about our trusted quantitative research methods.
