Baby loss

This information is for students who have experienced the death of a baby at any stage of their pregnancy, during birth, or after birth. It is also a resource for partners, other family members, and friends who might have been connected to the baby in some way.

The death of a baby can be a devastating experience for everyone involved. You are encouraged to talk with your department so that your ability to meet course deadlines and sit exams can be reviewed if needed. You might also be on a placement that may not be suitable for you at this time.

The University's Student Wellbeing and Inclusivity Service can provide advice and information, as well as mental and emotional support.

There are also various charities that specialise in baby loss. These organisations offer a range of services to meet the different needs of bereaved parents.

  • The Miscarriage Association - support for miscarriage, molar pregnancy, or ectopic pregnancy.
  • Sands - support for anyone affected by the death of a baby before, during or shortly after birth.
  • Lullaby Trust - support for those who have experienced loss through cot death.
