Career mentoring programme

Sometimes all you need is someone from outside your circle of friends and family, outside the university, to listen to what you have to say.

Career mentoring is a 6 month programme in which you receive a minimum of 6 hours contact with an experienced professional for one-to-one guidance, support and career coaching.  It is an exclusive opportunity to:

  • tap into the talent that’s gone before you
  • start building your professional network
  • share your mentor’s knowledge and experience
  • be challenged to realise your true potential

The Essex mentors are there to not only share their expertise but to empower you. To give you the time and space you need to make decisions that are right for you.

If you are registered at the University, whatever your year, level or discipline of study, you are eligible to apply.  Everyone is welcome.

About the programme

Mentoring relationships are unique between each pair, but what they all have in common is that you choose what direction they take. Once you and your mentor have learned a bit more about each other, you’ll discuss and agree the goals you want to work towards. These may change as your mentoring journey progresses but every decision made during the programme is yours. You’re in the driving seat.

Your mentor can help you answer all kinds of questions relating to your future.  Here are just a few of the reasons people have taken advantage of this amazing opportunity.  You can:

  • learn more about a specific career or industry
  • explore your ideas, values and future possibilities
  • gain insight from someone who has faced similar challenges or concerns about the world of work
  • get advice about setting up your own business
  • develop professional skills and contacts

Whether you just want to speak to someone who’s been there and done it, or you’re only now starting to think about your career, you’re in good hands. There are no right or wrong reasons to have a mentor, just opportunities for growth.

About the mentors

The Essex mentors are alumni and/or established business professionals who want to help make a difference to your future. Some are based overseas, others are very local. We have mentors who have recently been through the graduation-to-work transition whilst others have run their own businesses for years. They cover a huge range of sectors and professions, from Law to Business and Entrepreneurship, Translation and Modern Languages, Psychology, Biological Sciences, Computer Sciences, History and many more!

They all have something to offer and they all want to hear from you.

Depending on what you want to get from the programme, you might find yourself chatting to your mentor in Zest, or Skyping with someone on the other side of the world. What links all of our mentors is their excitement and enthusiasm in helping you to develop and achieve your goals.

If you are accepted onto the programme you will have the opportunity to view all of our mentor profiles and help us find the right match for you!  And if for any reason that person isn’t already on our database, we will do everything in or power to track them down.
