US Tax Forms

If you are a student who wishes to claim tax credits for tuition fees paid to the University of Essex, you may be required to submit form 1098-T.

When you have completed your relevant sections of the 1098-T form, contact us via Usloans@essex.ac.uk with a copy of the form. We will check the amount you have placed and provide our EIN number. It will be your responsibility to accurately complete the form and return it, if required by the US IRS.

Instructions regarding the completion of each section of the form can be found on the IRS website. Please also see bullet points below regarding some additional information that will assist you in completing the form:

  • FILER’S name Box – In this box place the following:

  • Box 1 – Payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses – you will need to place the tuition fees charged and paid by you for the financial year you are claiming. As tuition at Essex is charged in Academic Years over 2 or 3 terms, this does not align with the US Tax Year. The Academic Year usually starts in October and finishes in September the following calendar year. You may need to pro-rata the amount of money charged and paid by you.

I.e. if £20’000 was charged for tuition in 2024/2025 Academic Year, whereas £21’000 was charged for 2025/2026 Academic Year, and you study with us in both of these academic years, to calculate the total you would need to include 2/3 of the 2024/2025 tuition and 1/3 of the 2025/2026 tuition to have the final amount of tuition charged for the 2025 tax year.

  • Box 5 – Scholarships or Grants - Scholarships at Essex are applied on a pro-rata basis during each Academic Year. Should you receive a scholarship, you will need to pro-rata the amount to reflect how many terms the scholarship was applied to reduce your tuition fees payable to the university.

Canadian Tax Forms

If you require form TL11A or TL11D to be completed by the university, please download the correct form relevant to you and send a blank form to: Usloans@essex.ac.uk In your email to us, please indicate which financial years you require the form to be completed for. We complete one form for each Canadian financial year. Due to the Canadian financial year not aligning with our Academic Years, we can only complete the form when you have finished your studies for the financial year requested. For example:

  • A student that is registered for the 2025-26 Academic Year and is due to continue their studies into the next academic year, they can only request a form is completed for the 2025 financial year in 2026. To request a form to cover the remainder of the 2025-26 Academic Year, the student will need to request a form for the full 2026 financial year in 2027.
  • A student that is registered for the 2025-26 Academic Year and is due to finish their studies at the end of the 2025-26, they can request a form for the 2025 financial year from January 2026, and for the 2026 financial year, they can request a form is completed in 2026 when they have completed their studies and are no longer a registered student.

Tuition is charged in Great British Pounds and will be entered onto the form in this format. We complete the forms following the “Information for Educational Institutions outside Canada” webpage.
