Bruneian alumna Ummu Aimann Makhtar at her graduation
Whenever I think of Essex, I can only think of wonderful memories. The environment and community was so friendly and welcoming that I was able to adapt very easily and quickly. Essex Students' Union offers a variety of activities and hosts many different events. Being a multicultural university, one of my most favourite events was One World Essex (Cultural Week). I chose the University mainly because of the modules they offer for my course and I am glad I made that choice. With the encouraging and incredibly dedicated department staff and lecturers, I was able to graduate with a BA in Linguistics (Hons). This degree has helped me tremendously in my path as an aspiring Speech and Language Therapist (SLT). Returning to Brunei after graduating, I was able to work as an SLT assistant for 2 years and now I am pursuing my second degree in Speech Science. I will forever be thankful for the wonderful experience Essex has given me.

As a student studying Occupational Therapy at the University of Essex, I am grateful for the diverse campus community that provides a welcoming environment. The university facilitates joint sessions with different faculties, such as Physiotherapy, to prepare me for real-world settings. I have also received one-on-one support and feedback for my placements. Additionally, the university offers academic support, including assistance with essay writing, as well as personal development resources, such as time management training; These resources have allowed me to pursue my interests and develop new skills. The supportive community at the University of Essex has been instrumental in my growth as an Occupational Therapy student.

I’m a first-year international law undergraduate student from Jakarta, Indonesia. I chose the University of Essex because of its prestigious research department in government and politics. I wanted the full university experience, so I took up a new language to learn in addition to my course which I think is just great. I found that the university is incredibly diverse in its student body, you can feel it within the campus. I’m currently involved with both the Malaysian Society and the Indonesian Society where I am Vice President. Being involved with cultural societies help enrich my heritage and it also just gives me a touch of home where you will, eventually miss. It is comforting to know that you have a family that takes care of you when you go to a new place, the societies have done that for me.

Being able to study with Essex Law School at the University of Essex was truly an unforgettable experience. Choosing the University of Essex for my undergraduate law studies was undoubtedly a wise decision. I was warmly welcomed by the members of the Essex team prior to my official enrolment. Subsequently, I quickly adapted to the new environment after several events and parties during the Welcome Week. I was attracted to Essex Law Clinic and their work-based learning modules which act as platforms for students to analyse the law, and assist the team to provide free initial legal advice to the public. Through the work-based learning module, I managed to gain some work experience in a local council such as assisting caseworkers in dealing with victims involving all types of unlawful discrimination. This placement opportunity has strengthened my oral and written communication skills and while paying attention to clients’ needs, my interpersonal sensitivity also improved.  Throughout my time in Essex, the Student Union has taken great care to organise every festival so that everyone could have opportunities to interact with each other, and none of us would ever feel left out. I really appreciated their efforts as these activities somehow healed my homesickness. I met people from all over the world, and I truly felt that I was not just a student, but also a member of Essex.

Being an MBA student at University of Essex was really a transformative journey. Initially, my primary goal was to complete my postgraduate studies, but my ambitions grew as I immersed myself in the university's dynamic and supportive environment. Representing the Philippines, I eagerly shared diverse perspectives in class discussions and participated in the iTeams Programme, where I worked on solving real-world business challenges. Key experiences like Consultancy Week and Business Planning Week were particularly impactful, offering hands-on learning in practical business scenarios. These activities allowed me to apply my professional experience in a simulated business environment, deepening my understanding and skills. I attribute much of my growth to Essex’s ethos, which prioritizes student success and fosters a supportive community for all students, regardless of their background. By the end of my MBA journey, I earned my degree with distinction and received several awards, including the MBA Dean’s Award and the Best Project Award. My journey with Essex as a part of the Essex Business School and as a staff might have ended, but the ambition of inspiring more people to make change happen and create a positive impact on the world has just started. #IAmEssex and I will take these experiences with me to go through more transformative journeys while bringing positive impact one step at a time.

I chose Essex because of its proximity to London. As an international student, I was wary of the struggles I would face fitting in and being in a different country. I wanted a space where I could feel supported while pursuing my goal of continued development as a theatre practitioner. Since coming to Essex, I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience here. Being an hour away from London really paid off when I was invited to join in the Introductory Playwriting Group hosted by the Royal Court Theatre. In addition to being able to experience London and everything it had to offer, I have found Colchester to be my home away from home. Many students work and continue to stay on in the town during and after their studies, providing a tight community of people who go on to invest in the arts here.

My experience at Essex opened my eyes to a new world. International students from different continents and diverse backgrounds fascinated me. In lectures and classes, students were active in discussions and highly communicative. This atmosphere ignited my passion for studying. Beyond academics, I enjoyed various experiences such as picnicking around the lake, cooking and sharing meals with friends, and enjoying karaoke nights at the SU bar. Despite these rich experiences, the cost of living wasn't significantly different from Korea, as I saved money by cooking. I'm already excited to return to Essex, meet new people, and continue growing. I wholeheartedly recommend joining Essex.

I am a current student in MA TEFL/TESOL. This course is very intensive and the lecturers encourage students to interact in class. They are also pleased to answer the many questions that students send them by e-mail. Both lecturers and staff are very helpful. Moreover, the Students' Union provides many interesting societies for students, so they can make lots of new friends here. There are green spaces, a modern gym and nice accommodation. It is convenient to go to the town centre. I would highly recommend University of Essex.

Reputation and ranking were the things that first drew me to Essex. I felt confident I'd receive brilliant support and teaching (and I did!). Looking back, the best thing about my course was probably the unconditional support and help from my teachers. My modules were fascinating and the academics delivered the content in a way that made it easy to understand. I learnt so many valuable things during my time at Essex - not just about my subject, which we covered in great depth, but skills which will help me in life, for instance, teamwork, time management (especially around exam period!) and the ability to work and study individually. We had presentations back then and I remember we had to work in a team to deliver the best result. Colchester is a very nice place to live - there's lots going on, and plenty to see and do, especially if you're into history like me! I'm now back in Vietnam, where I work for Vietnam Airlines as an executive in the Investment Department.
