Water saving week is a great reminder that the small choices we make every day can add up to a big difference for the planet and for our future.

Do you know less that 1% of the worlds water is fresh and accessible for our use? Climate change, pollution and overuse are putting it under pressure. As a university campus where we have our own community, tiny changes in habits can lead to large amounts of water saved.

So what can you do during this week?

Start simple, shortening your showers by a couple of minutes, turning off the tap while brushing your teeth, and only running the washing machine or dishwasher when it’s full.

Think beyond the bathroom too. Reuse water bottles, report dripping taps or leaks to the Estates Helpdesk or your accommodation team, and don’t underestimate the power of awareness. Talking about water use helps normalise better habits.

What have we done to save water?

  • Installed low flow shower heads
  • Installed tap restrictors
  • Our Grounds team uses collected rain water into their wash pad system to wash down their equipment and vehicles
  • Stickers in toilets across campus to remind users to turn the tap off when finished using them

Saving water isn’t about giving things up, it’s about being smarter with what we have. By getting involved in Water Saving Week, you’re helping to protect ecosystems, cut energy use, and build a more sustainable campus community.

This week, take a moment to notice your water use. Small actions, repeated by lots of staff and students, really can make a difference.
