We’ve just finished installing solar panels across the rooftops at our South Courts accommodation which have doubled the amount of renewable energy we can generate at our Colchester Campus.

These panels should generate around 630,000 kWh of electricity every year, which is enough to power 230 homes, or charge 70,000 phones a week, so it’s a pretty big deal.

By generating our own clean electricity, we’re using less from the national grid cutting down on our reliance on the national grid and reducing carbon emissions.

By generating our own clean electricity, we’re using less from the national grid and cutting down carbon emissions. It’s one of the big steps we’re taking towards our target of net zero carbon emissions by 2035.

How can you get involved?

1. Join the Sustainable Students Society during Welcome Week. It’s a great way to meet new people and take action for the planet.

2. Live sustainably:

  • Cut down on waste
  • Try a few more plant-based meals
  • Walk, cycle, or hop on the bus instead of driving

3. Boost your knowledge by heading over to our Moodle page where you can learn more about embedding sustainability into your life at Essex and take part in our carbon literacy training.

Every small action adds up. By getting involved and making eco-friendly choices, you’re helping build a greener campus community.
