Christina Bonny is a Residents' Assistant (RA) at the University. Part of our Residence Life team, RAs and Senior RAs live in different areas of accommodation across our Colchester and Southend Campuses. They encourage community-building and peer-to-peer support through social activities, and provide a listening ear to all students, including those who live in private accommodation.

For University Mental Health Day this Thursday 14 March, Christina looks at how peer support can benefit your wellbeing:

The architects of adventure

The connectors

Ever heard the phrase "home is where the heart is"? At the University of Essex, our heart beats strong in our tight-knit community. RAs are the heartbeat of this community, diligently working to create a warm and welcoming environment where every resident feels like family.

As role models and mentors, members of the Residence Life team play a significant role in shaping the student experience on campus. Here's what some of our students had to say about the help they have received from Residence Life:

  • “My RA was really helpful during arrivals weekend; they helped me bring my stuff into my accommodation and offered to give me a campus tour.”
  • “I have attended a social activity organised by Residence Life, and I had a fantastic time meeting new people, making friends, and taking part in something enjoyable outside of my studies.”
  • “Whenever I have had a problem with my flat or feeling lonely, my RA has been available for a chat and to help signpost me to support or provide advice on how something could be resolved.”
