We chat to Southend student Scott, who tells us how volunteering is a great way to meet new people at University.

I’m Scott and I am a Mental Health Nursing student here at Essex.

I’m a mature student and, even though I’m nearly 40 years old and have a young family, I know that’s no excuse for me not to get involved with every aspect of University life.

Southend is a great little town with a thriving arts and music scene. If there is something I can get involved in to promote or improve this little corner of Essex, I’m always happy to jump in.

I wont lie, it’s a little daunting at times being older than other students but we’re all here to learn and experience that community feeling of University.

Age is just a number, and it’s always worth grabbing every opportunity to meet new people. Studying mental health has made me realise it is young adults who get hit hardest by mental health struggles, so I know it’s more important than ever to reach out and connect with my peers, especially during the pandemic.

The Southend VTeam are really welcoming. I’ve enjoyed working with them during beach cleans. It doesn’t cost me anything other than my time to do this and I know I’m making a positive impact on the local area by doing it.

I’d love to see some new faces come and join us in the sunshine soon!
