Halloween can be a wasteful time of year if we aren’t careful with our choices. We have put together some tips to make your Halloween a more sustainable one.

Tip 1: When picking a pumpkin, pick one which is grown more locally to you, because this will lower your carbon footprint. If you are planning on carving your pumpkin save the insides to cook with rather than throwing them away. Here is a great recipe using the pumpkin seeds https://www.lovefoodhatewaste.com/recipe/pumpkin-seed-brownie

Tip 2: Get creative with your costume - you don’t have to buy costumes from the shops, take a look in your wardrobe and see if you can upcycle any of the items to create an outfit. You could even visit a charity or second hand shop to see if you can find any extra bits to add to your outfit to make it extra spooky.

Tip 3: Spooky decorations – there are lots of great materials around the home which you could use to from cardboard, paper, plastic to things you may find on a walk such as leaves, pinecones or acorns to create an autumnal feel.

Tip 4: Instead of buying sweets that come in a lot of packaging (which may not even be able to be recycled) why not bake some Halloween biscuits, cakes or decorate some gingerbread men?

Tip 5: Once Halloween is over, check with your local recycling to see if you can recycle your pumpkin with your food waste – just remember take your tea lights out of them before you do this
