If you are applying to study an in-person History MA degree, you could be eligible for one of four available bursaries worth £2,500.

The bursaries are open to all applicants in need of financial support. In the absence of other determining factors, priority will be given to students from Global Majority/BAME backgrounds. This policy addresses the historic under-representation of students from these backgrounds within the discipline of History.

These bursaries come courtesy of a bequest from Professor Hugh Brogan, a long-time member of the Department of History at Essex who remained actively involved in the Department following his retirement in the late 1990s.

How to apply

All students who hold an offer for one of our History MA degrees will be contacted in September 2026 and invited to apply for the bursary. A deadline will be set in the initial contact for applicants to respond in order to be considered for this award.

Applicants will be asked to submit a short personal statement that outlines:

  1. Their intellectual rationale for Masters study. This section of the application should include reference to the specific aspects of the Masters programme for which they hold a place, and how study on this programme will deepen or extend their existing skills.
  2. Their suitability for the programme. In this section, applicants should make reference to their previous academic record and any additional interests in History or other disciplines relevant to their programme of study.
  3. If they are from a background that is under-represented in the discipline of History, Applicants may find it useful to consult the Royal Historical Society’s reports on equalities in completing this section.
