South Courts is near lots of green space to enjoy a walk or jog and only a five-minute walk to the centre of campus. This accommodation is ideal if you want the perfect balance between your academic studies and social life.
Each of the eight courts, Rowhedge, Thaxted, Manningtree, Brightlingsea, Harwich, Alresford, Frinton, and Walton are arranged into flats with shared kitchens for four to fourteen students, providing a great social hub to make friends and chat about your day. The larger flats accommodating up to fourteen students have two or three kitchens shared between the flat.
South Courts accommodation were built at different stages and, therefore, can be different in appearance, as well as the size of flat. Equally, rooms may slightly vary in size and layout, depending on where they are situated in the building.

Car parking permits are available for a limited number of accommodation areas on the Colchester Campus. Current availability is for those choosing to live in either South Courts and The Copse. For 2026/27, this offer is available to both new and returning students; please note permits are offered on a first-come-first-served basis and that spaces are limited. The permit will be charged at a reduced rate of £25.00 per term. All subject to availability.
Your room will be provided with a standard set of furniture including a bed with mattress, a wardrobe, a desk and a chair. You will need to bring your own bedding (duvet, pillows and bed sheets) as well as any other decorative items.
We do not allow damage to the wall from nails or screws, but you are welcome to put up posters using blue tac, or have small houseplants on your desk.
Our post room team will deliver your mail to your kitchen daily (except for weekends, bank holidays and university closure periods). Anything that has not been collected for 3 weeks will be returned to the sender.
Any large items or anything that needs to be signed for will be kept in the university post room and you will be emailed to let you know it is waiting for you.
We also have Amazon lockers on Square 3 which you can nominate as a delivery location for Amazon purchases.
Your postal address will be made up of your court name, followed by your flat number or room number, and the standard postcode for campus.

Students are responsible for keeping their own rooms clean and tidy. A bin is provided in each room and a hoover can be found in the kitchen. Inspections are carried out throughout the academic year to ensure rooms are not being damaged.
Students should work together to keep shared areas, such as kitchens, free from mess and trip hazards. You will need to wash up your own dishes and wipe down surfaces after cooking.
Cleaning staff visit throughout the week to carry out routine tasks in shared spaces, such as emptying bins, mopping floors, or cleaning shared bathrooms.
South Courts has laundry facilities on-site in Harwich Court, consisting of washing machines and tumble driers. You will need to provide your own detergent (which can be purchased in the SU shop on campus).
There is a medical centre at Colchester Campus for you to visit when you are unwell. Registration at the Centre is required in order to see a doctor, you will be able to register online either just before or when you arrive.
Pharmacies are available in Colchester and Wivenhoe for prescriptions and over the counter medications.
