Intelligent Embedded Systems and Environments

Intelligent embedded systems are used in a range of modern technology, from image processing and networked sensor nodes, to robotics and real-time critical systems.

Based in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Essex, our research group works in areas such as security, power, and performance and reliability for these systems.

We have two labs within our research group:

The Embedded and Intelligent Systems Laboratory carries out research in the areas of Embedded Systems and System-on-Chip design with focus on security, power, performance and reliability, advanced embedded systems and processor architectures targeted for cyber physical systems, automotive/industrial, robotics, image processing, networked and distributed sensor nodes/Internet of Things and real-time critical systems. Furthermore, it works in the area of Big Data Analytics, computer vision and embedded AI for real world problems and application areas. The lab is led by Professor Klaus McDonald-Maier.

The Intelligent Environments Research Laboratory which is led by Professor Hani Hagras, performs research in various areas of intelligent environments developing methods and systems whose primary goal is to support people living in ubiquitous computing environments. Our interests span from novel networking and middleware through intelligent agents, end-user programming, affective computing and mixed-reality to performing socio-technical studies on people living with technologies. We present here aspects from both our technological and social research.

Some of our researchers are also members of the Centre for Computational Intelligence, or are members of the research groups; AI for Decision Making, Brain-Computer Interfaces and Neural Engineering, and Robotics and Mechatronics.

Dr Hossein Anisi
