Estates and Campus Services Welcome Freshers Week

Before you join us there are a few things your need to complete and organise to make sure you are ready for University. The check list below will give you everything you need.

International New Student Checklist

JULY – AUGUST: Visa and Prep
  • Pay your tuition fee deposit (if required). In most cases, you’ll need to pay this before your CAS can be issued.
  • Receive your CAS from the University.
  • Apply for your Student Visa and book your biometric appointment.
  • Apply for university accommodation - you can explore the options available here
  • Start shopping for university essentials and preparing for your move.
  • Join online freshers groups to meet future housemates and coursemates.
Early September: Online Registration

Mid–Late September: Arrival in the UK
  • Arrive in the UK (recommended arrival window: Sept 23–27). If you're staying in campus accommodation, aim to arrive on your official move-in date).
  • Collect your BRP card and attend your visa registration interview.
  • Register with a local doctor (GP).
  • Get a UK SIM card and open a bank account.
  • Buy bedding, kitchen items and essentials for your room. We have a large supermarket in Colchester right next to the campus.
  • Start familiarising yourself with the campus and local area.
Welcome Week: First Week of October
  • Attend course inductions and meet your department staff.
  • Join student clubs and societies at the Freshers' Fair.
  • Explore the university campus and the local town.
  • Attend international student welcome and support sessions.
  • Check your final timetable and access course materials on Moodle.
  • Start making new friends and getting into student life!
October–November: Settling In
  • Get into a routine with classes, study sessions, and social activities.
  • Check for part-time job opportunities on campus or nearby.
  • Attend academic workshops or drop-ins to enhance your skills.
  • Explore local attractions and cultural spots in your town or city.
  • Settle into your accommodation and keep in touch with your family back home.
  • Stay on top of your coursework and ask for help if needed!

New UK Student Checklist

JULY – AUGUST: Preparation
  • Confirm your place through UCAS (once you have your results).
  • Apply for university accommodation – see options here.
  • Sort out your student finance – apply for your tuition fee and maintenance loans.
  • Start shopping for university essentials like bedding, kitchenware, and stationery.
  • Join Freshers' groups online to meet future housemates and coursemates.
Early September: Online Registration

Mid–Late September: Moving In
  • Move into your accommodation and meet your housemates.
  • Collect your student ID card at your in-person registration appointment.
  • Register with a local doctor (GP).
  • Set up your UK mobile phone and check your WiFi access.
  • Do a big supermarket shop to stock up your kitchen and supplies.
  • Explore the campus and get familiar with your new surroundings.
Welcome Week: First Week of October
  • Attend your department induction and meet your lecturers and tutors.
  • Go to Welcome Week events, fairs, and social activities.
  • Explore societies and sports clubs you might want to join.
  • Check out student support services and what’s available if you need help.
  • Get ready for your first official lectures!
