Eric's story

Eric Lui, BSc Information and Communications Technology student

"I never thought I could be part of a team."

I was really shy before and didn’t have any confidence. I never thought I could be part of a team but I was determined to get into a sport to help build my confidence. I’m not the tallest person in the world so I struggled to find a sport I was good at, but then I found boxing and it’s really helped me. It was quite hard to make the team, so I’m really proud to have done it.

I spent my first year trying to find the sport that was for me. I tried badminton, volleyball and loads of others but they didn’t work out. It was a bit frustrating but I’m quite a positive person so I just kept on going. Life goes on! If something goes wrong, I don’t look back, I just look forward. It wasn’t until my second year that I got noticed for my potential in boxing.

For me, everything in life has a purpose and I have no regrets. I wanted to become a more confident and talkative person and I’ve achieved that. I’ve also found something I love doing. It’s as if I started from a seed and grew into a really nice flower. Even doing this and telling my story is a step in the right direction.
