We Are Essex

Kevin's story

"I wouldn’t have met people from all over the world if I’d stayed in Spain to study."

I couldn’t decide if I wanted to come and study in the UK or stay in Spain, but it’s much better here than I expected. I prefer how university in England works; it’s so different to how it works in Spain. In Spain it is study, study, study, whereas here it is much more practical and useful. However, I am looking forward to going back home to the sunshine and my friends for the holidays, though.

My mother was born in England and raised in Ireland, which is why my name is a mixture. Kevin Brown is really Irish and Nicholas Perez is really Spanish. It’s super multicultural at Essex; I wouldn’t have met people from all over the world if I’d stayed in Spain to study. It’s an opportunity: not everyone can leave home at 18 and experience what I am experiencing. There are loads of Spanish people at Essex too which is nice because when you move to a new place, it’s good to find someone from your home and who speaks the same language as you. You can always see Spanish people coming because of the way they dress and speak. We are famous for shouting!
