Wired network access on campus

About wired network access

The wired network gives fast, stable connectivity for fixed University devices in offices, labs and teaching spaces. Most staff and students should normally use wifi (eduroam or Essex Guest), but some managed devices may be connected by cable where needed.

Who can connect

You can use the wired network if your device is:

  • University-owned and used for University work
  • Supplied and managed by DITS or your department’s IT team
  • Compliant with DITS security requirements, including having the CrowdStrike sensor installed

Devices that can’t use the wired network

For security reasons, the following cannot connect to the wired network:

  • University-owned computers without the CrowdStrike sensor
  • Equipment bought with University funds but not supplied or managed by DITS or an IT department
  • Mac computers, regardless of ownership or management (our current wired security controls don’t support Macs)
  • Devices connected only via docking stations that hide the device’s identity
  • Personal computers (BYOD)
  • Personal mobile devices

If you need to connect a Mac or personal device, please use eduroam or Essex Guest wifi, and the VPN for secure access to University systems.

If you believe you need wired access for a specific reason, please contact the IT Helpdesk for guidance.

Network maintenance (‘network at risk’ period)

Routine maintenance on the Janet Network takes place every Tuesday, 7am–9am. During this window, the University may also carry out network work to minimise disruption.

Services that rely on the network may be temporarily unavailable during this time, so please avoid scheduling critical activity then. Check the IT service status page for planned work.

Need help?

If you’re unsure whether your device can use the wired network, or need advice on getting set up, please contact the IT Helpdesk.
