Biography

After obtaining my BSc in Psychology at Ghent University in 2016, I completed a MSc in Experimental Psychology at the same institute in 2017; including a 6 month internship at the University of Oxford. I had started a 'Master after Master' in Statistical Data Analysis in 2018, once again at Ghent University, which I put on hold to start my PhD in January 2019 at the University of Essex. I currently work at the Brain-Computer Interfaces and Neural Engineering Laboratory at the University of Essex as a cross faculty PhD student in both the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering and Department of Psychology. I am interested in the interactive relation between (cognitive) behavior and functional brain activity. My current research focuses on the changing characteristics of pre-movement neural markers in EEG related to learning, to improve BCI based motor rehabilitation protocols.

Learning to Move: Exploring Neural Signatures of Motor Learning for Brain-Computer Interfacing

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have the potential to help movement rehabilitation. However, one problem with this technology stems from our incomplete understanding of how our brains change as we learn to move. Current BCI protocols are based on static neural markers of movement production, which are, in reality, constantly hanging. In this project we aim to investigating the neural basis and dynamics of motor learning and apply the newly gained knowledge to improve BCI rehabilitation protocol
