Sustainability strategy and policies

Sustainability at Essex

At the University we seek to encourage a sustainability-centred ethos across the entire estate and to encourage our students, staff and local community to be stewards of the environment.

Our Sustainability Team Sustainability Team Sustainability Team Sustainability Team are dedicated to improving the University’s environmental performances. They work to facilitate the university’s sustainability goals outlined in the Sustainability Sub-Strategy (.pdf). To enable this, the team’s sustainability and carbon reduction programmes are supported by various budget streams, from year-to-year operational budgets to long-term investments. The University is currently committing close to £1million per year into sustainability staffing, initiatives and projects.

We aim to reduce our carbon emissions by 43% of the 2005 baseline by 2020. We all have a personal responsibility for the environmental impact of our individual behaviours while on site.

Sustainability Engagement Group

The Sustainability Engagement Group coordinates and implements the Essex sustainability policy. The group includes both staff and student representatives. We aim to reduce the costs incurred by our University by improving waste, energy, transport and catering management, working with existing human resources and support.

In all our current activities, such as recycling, energy management, habitats, fair trade, transport, and procurement, our University has a considerable carbon footprint, but we are targeting considerable reductions in net emissions of carbon in the coming years. Although much has been achieved, there is much still to be done.
