News and events

Stay up-to-date

We organise a range of events throughout the year across our Colchester and Southend campuses. These events focus on environmental issues, from reducing our carbon emissions to exploring the grounds and biodiversity at our campuses.

Our events include:

  • our week-long Festival of Sustainability, looking at ways we can reduce our impact on the environment
  • our Green Impact environmental accreditation programme, bringing together staff and students to make the University more sustainable
  • pop-up stalls, allowing students and staff to discuss, learn and suggest ideas regarding sustainability at the University.

Key Events

Dr Bike

Dr Bike from the charity Re-Cycle will be on our Colchester campus at the North Towers Causeway every Wednesday morning in term time between 8.30am – 2.30pm. The team offers free checks as well as providing servicing, repairs and affordable second-hand bikes.

Festival of Sustainability

Each year the Sustainability Team hosts the week-long Festival of Sustainability that celebrates the things that we can all do to reduce our impact on the environment. This is a chance for all students and staff to get involved whether they are a keen environmentalist or just want to explore new ideas.

Various events will take place across the week from 12pm – 3pm, ranging from cooking demonstrations to bag printing.

Next year's festival will be taking place in March 2020.

Green Impact

Green Impact is an environmental accreditation programme run with support from the NUS. It brings staff and students in a department together in a team and provides them with a tangible framework to make their department more sustainable. The programme runs each academic year.

This is a great event for staff and wider departments to take part in:

  • It demonstrates an environmental commitment to prospective staff and students.
  • It is an opportunity to save resources and money.
  • It increases staff collaboration and morale.

Students can get involved in Green Impact by taking on roles including Green Impact auditors and project assistants.

Photography Competition

We ran a photography competition which focused on showcasing the biodiversity on our campus. The winning photographs are in the gallery below.

Pop-up stalls

Each month we will be hosting a pop-up stall in which we will explore a theme around sustainability. Students and staff can join us in discussing and coming up with new ideas to combat environmental issues.

Welcome Week and Freshers Fairs

Each year the Sustainability Team takes part in Welcome Week. This is a chance for all new and returning students to learn more about the sustainability team and what events and activities are coming up in the next academic year.
