Become a master of business

Gaining your Masters in business is a major achievement and greatly valued by employers. For some jobs, it's essential. For others, it gives you the competitive edge. It can accelerate your professional career, empower you to change vocation and give you the chance to study a subject you enjoy in depth.

But employers don't just need highly-qualified staff. They need adaptable graduates who excel in cross-cultural situations. They need managers and leaders with the confidence and ability to think for themselves.

At Essex Business School, we develop your decision making skills so you’re prepared to respond creatively, no matter the challenge. With us, you not only receive an education from a world-renowned business school, ranked in the UK's top 25 for research quality (The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018); you learn in an international environment, in a prime UK location near London, and develop a global, ethical, business perspective. As an Essex graduate, you’ll have the courage to think differently and solve business problems, even in times of change.

"Doing a Masters gives you another year to gain internships and take advantage of employability opportunities. I gained a place on a graduate buying scheme at John Lewis Partnership. It’s a chance I wouldn’t have had if it wasn’t for my Essex Business School education and the extra-curricular opportunities I’ve been involved with.”
Chloe Mongelard MSc Marketing and Brand Management (2017)

So, what do we have to offer?

Staff renowned for research

We’re home to some of the world’s most respected academics in the field of business and management, who join us from all over the globe. Our research was ranked top 25 in the UK for its quality in The Times Good University Guide 2018 (The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2018).

Accounting expert Emeritus Professor Prem Sikka lobbies for responsible tax practice and frequently writes for national and international titles, like The Independent, BBC News and Russia Today. Our Dean, Professor Geoffrey Wood, is just one of a number of journal editors amongst our academics and serves on the British Academy of Management (BAM) Council. Each of our academics is a member of at least one of our eight research centres, with many regularly presenting at international conferences.

Our staff ensure you experience a research-led education at the cutting edge of your discipline. Research is embedded into our courses, so you learn from contemporary examples and real-world experience that ensure you keep pace with the fast-moving world of business.

Strong business links

We maintain our networks with organisations in the private, public and third sectors to ensure our Masters courses reflect the latest business trends, and that our research makes an impact on the wider world.

Our Advisory Board helps to ensure our programmes provide you with the skills you need for the workplace and includes representatives from the likes of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Goldman Sachs and Rolls Royce. We also have links with industry bodies, such as CIPD, CMI, ACCA and CILT (UK), with many of our courses professionally accredited to give your CV the edge in the graduate employment market.

Our Colchester Campus is located on the Knowledge Gateway, home to the Parkside Office Village and more than 20 innovative SMEs. With businesses located on campus, you may benefit from internships and work placements to aid your employability.

Practical career skills

Our teaching combines research with practical examples. We use real-world case studies to apply social science theories to contemporary business issues, so you graduate with the knowledge and skills to put strategy into action. You learn through a combination of lectures, seminars and private study and may take part in group work, company visits and guest practitioner lectures.

Depending on your course, there are opportunities to take part in applied projects to develop your practical business skills. For example, our MBA students recently undertook a simulation game to project manage the rebuilding of a national football stadium and our marketing students developed a branding strategy for a local restaurant. Some courses also offer the chance to produce a practically-based business report rather than a dissertation.

Personalised learning, welcoming environment

We’re a medium-sized school where our students receive personalised support and attention. Our small cohorts mean everyone has the chance to be heard, leading to some lively debates in class! At Essex Business School, you find a friendly, supportive and welcoming environment where you have the confidence to challenge convention and make an impact.

You also benefit from superb study facilities, including our Bloomberg Financial Market Lab in our virtual trading floor at our Colchester Campus and 24 hour learning spaces in the award-winning Forum Building at our Southend Campus.

A vibrant postgraduate community

Our students are members of a lifelong, international business community. You experience close working relationships and make lasting friendships in a vibrant social and learning environment.

Our SET Connect Team in Colchester organise regular events for our Masters students, giving you the chance to have fun and meet new people from different cultures and backgrounds. You can also attend our regular seminar series to network with academic staff and hear from leading thinkers from universities across the globe.

You might also decide to join one of our many societies, including the Marketing Society, Entrepreneurship Society and the Trading and Investment Society at our Colchester Campus, and the Essex Entrepreneur Society at our Southend Campus, to make friends and develop your professional network.

Guaranteed accommodation

Essex makes your life easier by guaranteeing that all full-time postgraduate students can live on campus for the first year, as long as you apply and accept your accommodation offer by our deadlines. You'll also need to pay a deposit.
