Early arrivals activity programme

Whether you’re joining us early and quarantining in a hotel, isolating with us in your accommodation or just want some fun and engaging activities to get you into the swing of student life, we have a whole a programme of fun activities for you.

On demand activities

You can dip into our range of online events at any time. Try a yoga class or an arts workshop to get your mind and body fit, fun and happy.

And don’t forget, if you are an international student in quarantine or isolation, we are here for you. Check out our dedicated international students advice and guidance online.

Registration opens from 1 September. Once you’ve registered, you’ll be able to access a whole host of activities and information designed to get you up to speed and ready for University life.

Prepare for Essex – and receive a bursary

This year we are offering £250 cash bursary to students that complete our pre-arrival study skills course before 6 October.

The course is open to students that will register for their first year of study for a full-time undergraduate degree course starting in October 2021.

How to apply

You will need to complete the pre-arrival study skills course before 6 October 2021. You must fully complete the course and receive the certificate of completion to be eligible. You will be automatically identified as long as you meet the eligibility criteria.

Get to know your Students' Union

We understand the last thing you want to do when coming to university and a new country is to stay inside. So, your Students’ Union team have put together a Welcome programme to help you settle in, make friends and learn about what your SU has to offer - all of which you can get involved with whilst in isolation.

Explore the SU website to find out about the perks of your FREE SU membership, alongside some activities and the odd treat along the way.

Sport and exercise

We love sport at Essex and our sports teams have created a range of great exercise classes, for all levels and abilities. Just log on and get moving.

Learn a language

Learning the basics of a new language using apps like Duolingo can be a fun way to pass the time and keep your mind sharp.

Start a reading challenge

Goodreads allows you to set and track a reading target for the year, and you can connect with like-minded book fans and swap recommendations.

Try an audiobook

Sometimes there’s nothing more comforting than being read to. Audible are offering hundreds of titles free of charge. Sign in with your Amazon account to get started.

Keep a journal

We are living through exceptional times, the kind of times that make history. Start logging your thoughts and feelings now, not only might it help you navigate these current circumstances but what you write might one day have historical significance. What are you waiting for?

We can't wait to welcome you to Essex in October, so we have arranged a series of informal Arrival Mixer events for when you arrive to campus (or your managed quarantine hotel), allowing you to meet fellow students from your region before the start of term.
