Starting university is a milestone not just for students, but for the parents and families supporting them along the way. In this Parent Testimony, we hear firsthand from a parent whose child has recently embarked on their Essex journey - from the excitement of that first open day to the emotional moments of moving into campus accommodation and finding their feet. This story captures the mix of pride and joy that comes with watching your young person settle into university life, offering a heartfelt glimpse into what this transition feels like from the other side of the student journey.
Essex was the very first university open day we attended, and it set the bar high. We visited a few others afterwards, but there was just something special about Essex — the atmosphere, the friendliness of the students who showed us around campus and accommodation, and the overall vibe. They even gave us a lift back to campus after the accommodation tour, which was such a thoughtful touch!
We did. On our second visit, we had the chance to explore her department in more detail. A lecturer gave an informative talk about the course structure, expectations, and opportunities, which really helped her picture herself studying there. They even treated us to a free lunch — a small gesture that made the day even better.
Colchester is conveniently close to our home — less than an hour by train into London and just under two hours by car. The accommodation she chose is lovely: modern, ensuite, and well-equipped. There’s a laundrette just a minute or two away, a local shop, bus stops nearby, and even a large Tesco supermarket within walking distance.
Once we got everything inside, we set to work. We gave her flat a good deep clean, unpacked her things, and made her room super cosy. A big Tesco shop followed, and I cooked some meals that would last her a few days — a little piece of home to keep her going.
She misses home, of course, but she says she’s having the time of her life. And that makes it all worth it.
