A new Research Degrees Preparation Programme has been unveiled by the University of Essex to help aspiring and newly enrolled postgraduate researchers begin their studies with clarity and confidence.

Project lead Professor Philip Hancock, Faculty Dean (Postgraduate) in the Faculty of Social Sciences, said: “We want every new researcher at Essex to feel prepared, supported and excited about the journey ahead, and this programme is a fantastic way to help them begin with a clear sense of direction.”

Developed by experienced postgraduate supervisors and teachers, with contributions from the Essex Skills for Success team and the Students’ Union, the free online programme offers an accessible introduction to what postgraduate research at Essex involves. The initiative builds on the success of the award-nominated Essex Preparation Programme, which has been supporting undergraduate students for the past five years.

The new programme is suitable for anyone considering a research degree in any discipline, as well as those who have just started their research journey.

The programme explores key areas such as:

  • What to expect from a research degree at Essex
  • The academic and research skills students will develop
  • How to build a productive working relationship with supervisors
  • How to make a strong application

Structured into concise, topic led sections and supported by videos and further resources, the programme breaks down the research experience into manageable steps. By the end, participants will be better prepared and ready to thrive in their chosen degree, wherever they join from.

Professor Hancock said: “Stepping up to postgraduate research level study can be a big challenge, whether you have studied in the UK before or are joining Essex from overseas.

“Understanding the expectations, the relationship you will have with your supervisor, and the support available and the community you are joining, will all help with the transition to postgraduate research.

“Knowing how to make a strong application also puts you in the best possible position to be successful and to ensure an effective framework for your research degree.”
