The Research Degrees Preparation Programme is a free, online course for aspiring and enrolled postgraduate research students at the University of Essex. It is suitable for you if you’re looking to undertake postgraduate research in any subject or discipline at Essex. The programme provides a structured introduction to what to expect on your degree. It has been created by experienced postgraduate supervisors and teachers, and covers a range of topics, including:
- How to apply to a research degree
- What to expect from postgraduate life at Essex
- What to expect from a research degree
- The academic and research skills it will help you develop
- Establishing and sustaining a productive working relationship with your supervisors
The programme is easy to work through and breaks things down into discrete, topic-led sections, with links to videos and further resources to support you on your postgraduate research journey.

How to enrol
You can sign up for the course by following these simple steps:
- Register with 'Open Essex', the online platform on which this course will take place.
- Confirm your account by clicking the link in the email sent to you.
- Enrol on the Research Degrees Preparation Programme by logging into Open Essex and pressing "Enrol now".
