The latest from Essex Sport

Essex Sport Colchester Gym

The Sports Centre is now open

We are pleased to announce that, in line with the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown, Essex Sport facilities are open for University of Essex students and staff as of Monday 19 April.

Facilities will re-open in a phased approach, initially the Gym and the return of our Active Campus sessions. Opening hours are listed in the table below.

In order to access Essex Sport facilities or activities (including student sports clubs) all students and staff customers will need to adhere to the University’s advice regarding being tested twice weekly at the on-site test centre.

We will be conducting random checks on participants and facility users, and you will be required to provide evidence of having had a test in the past 4 days. If you are unable to provide this evidence you may be subsequently restricted from attending Essex Sport facilities or activities for the next two weeks. Find out more about the University's on-site testing services.

Thank you all for your continued support and understanding, from us all at Essex Sport.

Returning to the Sports Centre: what you need to know

Please familiarise yourself with the below measures before visiting the Sports Centre.

General measures

Please ensure you have viewed our Terms and Conditions before making a booking and visiting us. By making a booking, you are agreeing to these terms.

  • Please wear a face mask when you arrive at the Sports Centre, and while moving around the facilities. You do not have to wear a mask when exercising or playing sport
  • Please ensure you bring your membership/student/staff card to gain entry to the facilities. We are unable to grant access through the turnstiles without a card
  • Wash and sanitise your hands regularly during your visit
  • Arrive ready to exercise; toilets will remain available to members, but the changing rooms and showers will not be open
  • Please follow signage and respect social distancing guidelines
  • We are now operating as a cashless facility; only card payments will be accepted on site

Essex Sport Gym

Gym sessions must be booked in advance online or via the Essex Sport app. Members will be able to book and attend multiple gym session per day.

Take a look at this video guide on 'How to book a gym session'

  • Gold members will be able to book the gym 7 days in advance
  • Silver members will be able to book the gym 5 days in advance
  • Please use the lockers provided; bags will not be allowed on the gym floor
  • Please wipe down all equipment before and after use
  • Mats and resistance bands will not be available; please bring your own
  • Arrive 5 minutes before your session and come ready to train

Capacity in the gym has been reduced, in line with social distancing guidelines, to 42 people per 50 minutes in the gym. We will revisit this when guidelines are updated by the Government.

A ‘no-show’ policy will be in place for the gym. This will be a 2-strike rule, followed by a 7 day restriction on bookings for repeat ‘no shows’. This is a necessary step to ensure fair use of gym sessions.

Fitness classes

In person Fitness Classes will be available from 17 May. These must be booked in advance online or via the Essex Sport app.

  • Gold members will be able to book classes 14 days in advance
  • Silver members will be able to book classes 10 days in advance
  • Mats will no longer be available; please bring your own
  • Sanitise your hands at the start and end of the session, and before any drink breaks
  • Do not share or pass any equipment, or use any equipment marked out of use
  • Please arrive for, and exit, classes promptly; you will be able to access the turnstiles 5 minutes before the class start time

Facebook live fitness classes will continue daily.

Recreational bookings

Unfortunately we will only be able to offer a limited selection of recreational activities until at a later stage. From 17 May, we will be making available basketball and squash (1 person only) and badminton (2 people max).

Recreational Activities (.pdf)

Once we are able to expand the selection, recreational activities will become available to book via the Essex Sport app or online booking page.

Essex Sport members

Current members

All current Essex Sport members will be contacted directly by our admin team with more information specific to their type of membership.

Essex Sport members who have their membership currently frozen have the option to unfreeze and continue their membership. Watch this short video guide on how to re-activate your membership.

Those that don't re-activate their membership will remain frozen until such time as our facilities return to 'normal'. Members can choose to unfreeze their membership at any time.

New members

UoE students and staff can purchase a membership online.

Community members

Unfortunately, we cannot grant access to Community members at this time. At present the University of Essex has protection measures in place that preclude us from welcoming community members back to sports facilities.  The protection measures are being reviewed and we will advise when they are relaxed, hopefully in line with the Government roadmap end of restrictions.

Non-members

Pay-as-you-go bookings for University of Essex staff and student non-members will be available for fitness classes, recreational activities and Active Campus sessions.

Please ensure you have read our Terms and Conditions before making a booking and visiting us. By making a booking, you are agreeing to abide by our terms.

Active Campus

We’re excited to announce we will be delivering a small programme of social sessions, returning from 26 April 2021. As the Government roadmap allows organised outdoor sport to return, we will be starting with football and adding sports over the following weeks.

Please visit our Active Campus webpage to find out more.

Frisbee Golf

Due to the current lockdown and Government guidance, and to ensure we can keep our campus as safe as possible, we have temporarily removed the posts from the Frisbee Golf course, until such time that it is safe to be re-opened.

Essex Sport Junior

The University is still under Enhanced Protection levels which is being reviewed on a regular basis. This means, despite the Government Roadmap out of lockdown allowing outdoor Children’s sport to return from 29 March 2021, we are currently unable to offer any sessions.

We are working towards a revised programme when permitted. If you have any questions, please contact sportsdevelopment@essex.ac.uk

CHUMS

We have provisional plans to run our popular multi-sport holiday camp, CHUMS, this summer pending approval. Provisional dates are from Thursday 22 July to Friday 27 August.

More details will be released over the coming weeks. If you have any questions, please contact chums@essex.ac.uk
