Reopening the Sports Centre; planning ahead to keep you safe

The health and wellbeing of our members, and our staff, is our top priority. Since 16 March, following government guidance, our facilities have been temporarily closed in order to safeguard our Essex Sport community.

We would like to thank you for your patience and understanding during this time, and to assure you that we are doing everything we can to reopen the Sports Centre as safely as possible.

Essex Sport on social media:

The Essex Sport team share their plans to reopen the Sports Centre as safely as possible. The webinar recording from 22 June 2020 covers:

  • the gym and fitness classes
  • sports courses, CHUMS, and Active Sessions

Reopening FAQs

When will the Sports Centre reopen?

We do not have a confirmed open date yet, but are working towards reopening in September 2020, providing that Government and University guidance allow us to do so.

Will any outdoor facilities, such as the tennis courts, be open earlier?

We are not able to selectively open facilities; these will only open alongside our indoor facilities. The University is still in its ‘Advanced Protection’ phase, meaning the Campus is closed for anything other than essential services.

Will the opening hours remain the same?

Opening hours will likely be slightly different when we reopen and we'll confirm nearer the time. 12-2pm will be change to peak hours from reopening.

Will there be reduced capacity in the gym and fitness classes?

There will likely be a reduced capacity in the gym and fitness classes, in line with social distancing guidelines. We are currently looking at a capacity of 40 people per 50 minutes in the gym. The capacity of fitness classes will also be reduced, depending on the type of activity.

Members will also have to book their space in the gym.

If members are required to book their slot in the gym, will there be fees implied if they do not turn up?

We currently have a ‘no-show’ policy in place for our fitness class and, with reduced capacity in the gym, we will be expanding this policy to cover the gym as well.

Will I be able to access fitness classes and workouts from home?

We are working on a digital option for members to access live and pre-recorded workouts from home, as well as personalised fitness programmes designed in discussion with an Essex Sport staff member.

Will the changing rooms and showers be available?

Toilets will remain available to members, but the changing rooms and showers will not be open, so please arrive at the gym already dressed for your workout.

Will the climbing wall be available when you reopen?

The climbing wall will be available, but at a reduced capacity. We will be paying close attention to cleaning the facility, and members will need to follow guidelines to ensure safe use.

Will there be extra cleaning in place around the facilities?

Yes. Staff are being trained on enhanced cleaning measures throughout the facilities. We will also provide extra sanitation stations and waste disposal.

Will I need to wear a mask?

You will need to wear a mask when you arrive at the Sports Centre, and while moving around the facilities. You do not have to wear a mask when exercising or playing sport.

When will Essex Sport Junior activities start again?

We are hoping to resume Junior courses and Pay & Play sessions in September.

Unfortunately, owing to the University still being in the ‘Advanced Protection’ phase, Summer CHUMS be not be running this year. We understand this will be disappointing for many of you, and we will be sorry not to see the Minis and Juniors on Campus this summer.

What will the Sports Development programme look like in the Autumn Term?

We are looking to expand our offer of social sports, as part of our Active Campus programme, and our intramural leagues. We are hoping to resume our range of sport courses (Learn To courses) in October.

Will my membership automatically renew when you reopen?

All members will be contacted in advance of the Sports Centre reopening regarding their membership. Members will have the following options:

  • Continue with membership at reduced price
  • Change to digital only membership
  • Freeze membership for a further 3 months

Full details will be given at the time.

Will you be going cashless?

Yes, we are working towards being cashless across the entire facility.

Keeping active at home

We appreciate that the past few weeks may have made it harder for many to retain their normal levels of physical activity. We are still here to support you. Visit our 'Fitness at Home' page, or contact us at fitness@essex.ac.uk for fitness enquiries and advice.
