General measures

Please ensure you have viewed our Terms & Conditions before making a booking and visiting us. By making a booking, you are agreeing to these terms.

  • Please wear a face mask when you arrive at the Sports Centre, and while moving around the facilities. You do not have to wear a mask when exercising or playing sport
  • Please ensure you bring your membership/student/staff card to gain entry to the facilities. We are unable to grant access through the turnstiles without a card
  • Wash and sanitise your hands regularly during your visit
  • Arrive ready to exercise; toilets will remain available to members, but the changing rooms and showers will not be open
  • Please follow signage and respect social distancing guidelines
  • We are now operating as a cashless facility; only card payments will be accepted on site

Digital membership

We are working on a digital option for members to access live and pre-recorded workouts from home, as well as personalised fitness programmes designed in discussion with an Essex Sport staff member.

Essex Sport Gym

Gym sessions must be booked in advance online or via the Essex Sport app. To ensure fair use, members will be able to book and attend one gym session per day.

Take a look at this video guide on 'How to book a gym session'

  • Gold members will be able to book the gym and Studio 1 fitness space 7 days in advance
  • Silver members will be able to book the gym and Studio 1 fitness space 5 days in advance
  • Please use the lockers provided; bags will not be allowed on the gym floor
  • Please wipe down all equipment before and after use
  • Mats and resistance bands will not be available; please bring your own
  • Arrive 5 minutes before your session and come ready to train

Capacity in the gym has been reduced, in line with social distancing guidelines, to 48 people per 50 minutes in the gym. We will revisit this when guidelines are updated by the Government.

A ‘no-show’ policy will be in place for the gym and Studio 1. This will be a 2-strike rule, followed by a 7 day restriction on bookings for repeat ‘no shows’. This is a necessary step to ensure fair use of gym sessions.

Fitness classes

Fitness classes must be booked in advance online or via the Essex Sport app. Peak and off-peak access to fitness classes still apply; classes after 3pm will only be available to Gold members.

Some fitness classes will now be in the Sports Hall in order to retain capacity. Please check the location of your class before attending.

  • Gold members will be able to book classes 14 days in advance
  • Silver members will be able to book classes 10 days in advance
  • Mats will no longer be available; please bring your own
  • Sanitise your hands at the start and end of the session, and before any drink breaks
  • Do not share or pass any equipment, or use any equipment marked out of use
  • Please arrive for, and exit, classes promptly; you will be able to access the turnstiles 5 minutes before the class start time

Student only classes
Classes in Studio 2, and virtual classes delivered through ‘Fitness on Demand’, will only be available for University of Essex Student members.

Student, Staff and Public classes
Classes taking place in the Sports Hall, as well as live classes in the Cycle Studio, will be available to all members.

To ensure members are not restricted in the style of classes they can attend, scheduling has been configured to ensure a range of classes can be accessed by all members.

Essex Sport members

Current members

Essex Sport members have the option to unfreeze and continue their membership (Direct Debit costs will be temporarily lowered). Watch this short video guide on how to re-activate your membership.

Those that don't re-activate their membership will remain frozen until such time as our facilities return to 'normal'. Members can choose to unfreeze their membership at any time, providing there is capacity.

New members

Owing to capacity constraints, we will only be able to accept new student members at this time.

There will be a cap on the number of non-student members that can unfreeze their memberships. This will be done on first come, first served basis. As Government restrictions are eased and capacity increases, we will be able to lift the cap on memberships.

If you do not have an Essex Sport membership, but you have used our facilities for sport courses, CHUMS and junior activities, recreational bookings, or other activities, you will need to ensure you've viewed our Terms & Conditions before making a booking and visiting us. By making a booking, you are agreeing to abide by our terms.

Essex Sport Junior

Following a full review of all Essex Sport activities, and after careful consideration, we have sadly had to take the decision to temporarily suspend all activities for under 18-year-olds.

We understand this is deeply disappointing news and would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused. We will directly contact all those affected.

The decision will be reviewed ahead of Monday 2 November. Please read the full statement for more information.

Sport courses and Active Campus

There will be an increased focus on our social sport offering in the Autumn Term, as part of our Active Campus programme. This will include drop-in sessions, campus leagues, 'learn to' courses and one-off events. We are hoping to resume our programmes in October.

Keeping active at home

We appreciate that the past few weeks may have made it harder for many to retain their normal levels of physical activity. We are still here to support you. Visit our 'Fitness at Home' page, or contact us at for fitness enquiries and advice.
