CHUMS

Multi-sport holiday camps for 5 to 14 year olds

If you're looking for something that will keep your young ones entertained and active during the school holidays, then CHUMS is for you.

Our popular multi-sport camp takes place during the Christmas, Easter, and summer school holidays, and welcomes over 300 young people each year.

Our aim is to make the school holidays as fun, safe, and exciting as possible. We take enormous pride in the memorable experience we provide for your children; supporting them as they learn new skills, try new sports and make new friends.

Summer CHUMS 2021

Essex Sport is pleased to bring CHUMS back for 2021 with COVID secure camps running throughout the summer holidays. Our first priority is the health and wellbeing of our participants, and so we have been working hard to ensure your child(ren) will continue to have a safe and fun environment to grow, learn and create memories – and of course meet plenty of new friends on the way!

We have made a number of important changes to the camp this year to ensure we can keep children, staff, and parents/guardians safe, but still provide the same unique and fantastic CHUMS experience that you have come to expect of us. These include:

  • Reducing the maximum overall capacity of the camp – making it even more important that you secure your child's place early.
  • Introduction of three age groups (red 5-7 yrs, orange 8-10 yrs and green 11-14 yrs) in maximum bubbles of 15 children per group.
  • New adjusted programme schedule to include more open-air outdoor activities utilising the award-winning green spaces situated at our Colchester campus.
  • Stringent new protocols to ensure the camp is COVID-19 secure including: enhanced cleaning schedules, sanitisation stations throughout the facility, contactless registration, one-way socially distanced queuing systems and the requirement for all CHUMS staff to be pre-screen daily and tested twice a week (see 4 C’s strategies in the FAQ section).
  • No financial risk to your booking, with credit or a refund offered if your child cannot attend due to self-isolation or displaying COVID-19 symptoms.

To reflect current government guidance, we have created a FAQ's below and will continually be updating this for if and when guidance changes as we get closer to the camp start date.

Red Group (5-7 years)

Our red group is tailored at children aged 5-7 years old and includes a fun range of different activities suited for minis including 3 T’s cricket, football, basketball, tag games, and a CHUMS favourite – camouflage! Our red group will have exclusive access to our ‘Time Out Lounge’ which will be their base throughout the holidays to use for other creative activities including arts and crafts and fun quizzes.

Our Red Group activities are offered in partnership with Wivenhoe Park Day Nursery Holiday Club.

If our CHUMS Red Group is fully booked, Wivenhoe Park Day Nursery Holiday Club is open to KS1 children and offers a wealth of Forest School activities (.pdf) in the University grounds.

Orange Group (8-10 years) and Green Group (11-14 years)

Orange and green groups will take part in a much wider programme of sport activities. Traditional favourites include football, basketball, netball, tennis and dodgeball. They will also have the opportunity to participate in more unique non-traditional activities such as top rope climbing on our recently refurbished wall, having a go on our famous frisbee golf course, and competing in some outdoor archery on our award-winning grass pitches! Altogether, they will have the chance to try over 25 different sport throughout the week and receive some expert coaching from our in-house NGB qualified coaches along the way!

COVID-19 FAQs

Why are you no longer offering Mini and Junior CHUMS?

For this summer, we have split the camp into three groups rather than two to ensure we can meet current government guidance by having a maximum of 15 children in a bubble. However, our new red group will receive a similar experience to that of Mini CHUMS, whilst the same applies to Junior CHUMS for our green and orange groups.

Can my children/sibling be placed in the same bubble if they belong to different age groups?

Our age groups have been specifically selected as we believe these brackets allow us to offer a high-quality CHUMS experience to all participants. It may be possible to group siblings if age appropriate, however, you will need to send an e-mail to chums@essex.ac.uk for consideration and approval before booking.

Please note that due to the strict COVID-19 measures to ensure group bubble meet current government guidance and are kept as strictly consistent as practically possible, we cannot always guarantee sibling or friend requests if they compromise the safety of the camp or do not meet recommended government guidance.

How will activities be impacted by new COVID-19 measures? Will there be any sport activities taking place indoors?

Our team has been working hard on an adjusted programme schedule that will include more open-air outdoor activities utilising the award-winning green spaces situated at our Colchester campus. Indoor activities will also be part of the programme; however, these facility spaces will be well ventilated with doors and windows open where applicable to ensure a safe environment.

The important thing to emphasis is that our activities will remain as fun, safe and varied as ever and your children are going to have a fantastic time with us.

How will you be ensuring my child is suitably protected from the risk of transmitting COVID-19?

Our first priority is the health and wellbeing of our participants, and so we have been working hard to ensure your child(ren) will be participating in a safe environment. To help keep all children, staff, and parents/guardians safe we're introducing 4 key operational strategies, referred to as the 4 C's of CHUMS. These are:

Children - the focus of the camp!

  • Reduced the overall maximum capacity of the camp
  • Introduction of 3 age groups with a max of 15 children per bubble (5-7, 8-10 and 11-14)
  • New adjusted programme schedule to include more open-air outdoor activities utilising the award-winning green spaces situated at our Colchester campus.

Crew - all staff and adults related to the camp

  • Contactless registration and collection including pre-screening of all children
  • Requirement for all CHUMS staff to be pre-screen daily and tested twice a week
  • PPE mandatory for staff when greeting parents and for first aid.

Cleaning - frequent and enhanced

  • Supervised hand washing throughout the day
  • Extra sanitisation stations throughout the facilities
  • Enhanced cleaning schedule of facilities and equipment before, during and after activities.

Create - a safe and welcoming environment

  • One-way system for drop-off and collection, as well as socially distanced queuing
  • Extra signage reminding everyone to wash their hands, wear a mask and remain socially distanced
  • Staggered break and lunchtimes.

What if my child develops symptoms of COVID-19 on the camp?

If any child is suspected of displaying coronavirus symptoms during their time with us, you will receive a phone call and it will be advised that they are sent home immediately where you should follow the most recent government guidelines for self-isolation. Whilst a child is waiting to be collected, they will be separated from the group and be accompanied by one of our staff members. Once the child has left the venue, a full deep clean of the facilities will take by Essex Sport staff.

How long will it be before my child(ren) can return to CHUMS if they tested positive, or have been notified by NHS Test and Trace that they must isolate?

You must comply with the advice given by NHS Track and Trace and self-isolate for the stated number of days they have advised. Under no circumstances should you attend the camp in this time period. Any remaining camp days of your booking will be placed as a credit note or can be refunded.

You will be able to return to CHUMS once self-isolation has been completed.

What if another child in my child's bubble tests positive - what would happen?

If somebody in your child’s bubble tests positive, you will be asked to refrain from attending CHUMS until Public Health England (PHE) have informed anybody considered to be a ‘close contact’. If NHS Test and Trace deem that you or your child has been in close contact with a person who has tested positive for COVID-19, you will need to isolate for 14 days from the day that they were last in contact with that person.

People who live in the same household or are part of the same support bubble do not need to isolate so long as the individual who has been asked to isolate does not have any symptoms.

In the result of a suspected outbreak that goes beyond camp bubbles, we will liaise with the University COVID-19 and Public Health local protection teams for a rapid investigation to take place and will take appropriate action on any advice given. This may entail a large group having to self-isolate at home as a precautionary measure, or, in more extreme cases, the whole camp to be closed for a period of time. Parents will be informed immediately by phone and e-mail.

If my child(ren) cannot attend the camp due to self-isolation, or because they are displaying symptoms of COVID-19, will I qualify for a refund?

If you are unable to attend a session due to a COVID-19 related factor e.g. self-isolation, quarantine, displaying symptoms, this would be classified as an exceptional circumstance and you will be entitled to a refund or credit. You may be asked for an official medical note from a medically qualified practitioner.

Please note that this would also apply if for any reason we had to cancel the camp due a COVID-19 related incident.

Sport camps

Currently, we have no plans to deliver our basketball and tennis camps in summer 2021. We hope to be able to bring these back in some format later in the year.
