Profile

Biography

Dr. Sonia S. Siraz is the Deputy Director of The Essex MBA and Lecturer (Asst. Professor) in Entrepreneurship at the University of Essex. Dr. Siraz received her Ph.D. in Management with the highest distinction from IE Business School, Madrid, Spain. Before joining EBS, she was a postdoctoral research scholar (collaborating with Sharon A. Alvarez) at the University of Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Dr. Sonia S. Siraz's research interests revolve around understanding the different factors that enhance or constrain the success of entrepreneurial endeavors in new and established firms. Specifically, she is interested in studying how different audiences make legitimacy judgments under conditions of uncertainty and the implications for equitable resource acquisition (especially for minority-owned ventures, community enterprises, and ventures operating in controversial sectors such as cannabis, fracking, genetically modified foods, etc.) Dr. Siraz's research has been published in journals such as the Journal of Management Studies (FT50 listed), the European Management Review, or Industrial Economics, and is regularly featured in best paper proceedings such as Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research and Academy of Management Best Conference Paper Proceedings. Besides leading international conferences, including the Academy of Management (AOM), the Babson College Entrepreneurship Research Conference (BCERC), the European Group for Organization Studies (EGOS), and the European Academy of Management (EURAM), Dr. Siraz's research has also been invited for presentation at prestigious think-tanks such as The Brookings Institution (Washington D.C). Dr. Sonia S. Siraz had the honor to be awarded the French State Award for Academic Excellence. Her work has been nominated for best paper awards at the Academy of Management Annual Conference and received a Best Paper Award at the Iberoamerican Academy of Management. Prior to obtaining her Ph.D. in Management, Dr. Siraz specialized in International and European Union Law and gained over 10 years of research, teaching, and practice experience. She worked as an Assistant Professor (Lecturer) of Law in France and was an entrepreneur, founding her consultancy firm, with a rich and diverse portfolio of clients ranging from Governmental authorities to SMEs.
