Profile

Biography

BIOGRAPHY Bisi is a British academy postdoctoral research fellow working on Lived religion and socioeconomic mobility among second-generation Nigerian Pentecostal-Charismatic Christians in London. The project investigates how Nigerian cultural and Christian religious upbringing and British socialization processes impact the lived experiences of Nigerian-British Pentecostal-Charismatic youth in London. It proffers a different perspective for understanding inequalities in the socioeconomic outcomes of young people from ethnic minority background. For her PhD, Bisi worked on Nigerian Pentecostals and ‘reverse mission’ in London and Amsterdam. She explored the concept of reverse mission from the perspective of both church leaders and members. The aim was to gain in-depth insights into the strategies that migrant Pentecostal churches employ to attract non-Africans, and the theological and social factors that shape their evangelistic practices. During her PhD at the University of Roehampton, Bisi worked as a Research Assistant for a Susanna Wesley Foundation-funded project, ‘The pedagogical challenges of teaching ministerial theology to students from non-traditional diaspora churches in Britain’. The research was the first extensive and systematic investigation into the expectations and learning approaches of middle-aged students from African and Afro-Caribbean ethnic minority background.
