Welcome to our department

Calling all Sociology & Criminology students!

Come and find out more about your course, meet key members of staff and meet the people you’re going to be studying with.

We expect all our students to attend their welcome events as you will receive important information to help you start your university experience.

There's plenty to get involved in during Welcome Week, so be sure to take a look at the wider University Welcome events and Students' Union events.

We’re also introducing new Campus Tours this year run by your new lecturers in the department. We want to be sure you’ve got help finding your way around campus.

Mandatory welcome event for all incoming new undergraduate students to Essex Sociology & Criminology. You’ll meet academic and professional services staff in the Dept and learn crucial information about studying with Essex Sociology and Criminology.

The event features talks from:

Head of Department - Dr Linsey McGoey
Director of Education - Dr Michael Bailey
Undergraduate Director - Dr Darren Thiel
First-year Director - Dr Tara Mahfoud

You’ll also have a chance to meet lots of other staff in the Dept, meet your fellow students, participate in group activities, and have a free lunch.

This session includes a chat with some of our student volunteers, followed by a reception in the Sociology Common Room.
