Essex provides two tools for creating forms and surveys:
Use Microsoft Forms for most things. Use Qualtrics only for academic teaching or research where you need advanced survey logic, panel management or research analysis tools.
Before collecting personal data, check the University's data protection guidance. This applies whichever tool you use.
Microsoft Forms is the recommended tool for most University forms and surveys. You can create surveys, quizzes and polls quickly, view responses live, and export results to Excel. No extra licence is required.
Use Microsoft Forms for:
Use Qualtrics instead if your survey is for academic teaching or research and needs advanced branching, panel management or in-depth research analysis.
Forms are owned by the account that creates them. If you leave the University or change roles, transfer ownership before you go so responses are not lost.
Qualtrics is the University’s academic survey platform for teaching and research purposes only. It should not be used for administrative, commercial or operational surveys. Use Microsoft Forms for those.
Use Qualtrics for:
Do not use Qualtrics for staff engagement surveys, service or event feedback, event registrations, or general operational data collection.
Always sign in at essex.eu.qualtrics.com. Signing in anywhere else may create a duplicate account. If you think you have a duplicate account, email caquery@essex.ac.uk.
Qualtrics has an email sending limit of up to 500 emails per 7-day period.
If you are leaving Essex, transfer ownership of any active surveys before you go.
