Verification of Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Learning
Overview
This module provides students who have completed prior learning related to musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging the opportunity to apply a structured approach to review this learning and for it to contribute to a postgraduate award.
Clinicians who have undertaken some musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging education will review their knowledge, evaluate the associated evidence base, identify areas for development and demonstrate an understanding of the role of musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging in their professional role.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the examination of the main peripheral joints using ultrasound.
- Critically evaluate the use of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool with musculoskeletal pathologies.
- Compare and contrast normal and pathological findings identified through the use of ultrasound.
- Evaluate the role of ultrasound within their professional practice.
Entry Requirements
All entrants must meet the following requirements:
- a relevant first degree OR a relevant professional experience or qualifications that demonstrates ability to study at level seven
- a minimum of one year post-registration experience
- current registration with the relevant UK or equivalent professional body
- HCPC or equivalent registration, e.g. in case of doctors (GMC) and nurses (NMC)
- access to a suitable ultrasound machine.
Structure
Module Outline
This module has no formal taught component, with all sessions based around individual tutorials following access to digital resources. Students will be directed to relevant resources including scanning protocols and findings typical to common musculoskeletal presentations, these resources will inform the student’s coursework and provide evidence of an understanding, (not clinical capability) of musculoskeletal ultrasound imaging. Clinical capability is assessed in a subsequent module in the International Musculoskeletal Ultrasound awards.
Assessment strategy
100% coursework:
- Portfolio evidencing application of ultrasound to work-based practice, professional issues, clinical reasoning and containing scanning log-book
Fees and funding
- Fees for 2025-26 (.docx).
