Essex Artificial Intelligence Policy Observatory for the World of Work

Jurisdiction Reports and Trackers

Part of a globe, with south-east Asia and China visible.

E-AIPOWW is the first AI Observatory that is defined by a focus on how the world of work is being rapidly transformed by AI Regulation, Development, and Governance, globally.

E-AIPOWW jurisdiction cases and trackers demonstrate the different approaches taken in regulation, development, and governance surrounding AI. Case studies focus on the European Union, China, India, Brazil, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

  • Regulation: Governments are working on laws, guidelines, and other types of policies surrounding AI internationally, from a variety of perspectives. While our case studies cover broad themes for AI regulation, the E-AIPOWW focus is on existing and likely outcomes for workers.
  • Development: Public and private sectors internationally are working to advance AI innovation, research, and development. While our case studies cover broad themes for AI development, the E-AIPOWW focus is on existing and likely outcomes for workers.
  • Governance: Civil society is responding to advances in AI, and social movements include trade union, NGO and online media activities. While our case studies cover broad themes for AI governance, the E-AIPOWW focus is on existing and likely outcomes for workers.

These categories provide a holistic overview of how the state, businesses, and civil society are managing and responding to the rise of AI, with a focus on workers.

The Tracker

E-AIPOWW Trackers document government bills, company development initiatives, and union activities, relating to artificial intelligence across seven jurisdictions; Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union, India, United Kingdom, and the United States. AI regulation is not labour law, but all laws, all company actions, and all union actions to regulate, develop or govern AI’s use, have implications for the worlds of work.
