For BA History and Drama student Dan Casey, a degree at Essex was simple: it meant that he didn't have to choose between his two greatest interests.

And, by performing, directing, and taking to the stage as Jacqueline Ripper, all alongside his studies, Dan has helped embody the celebration of difference that brought him to Essex.

"Drama and theatre have always been my greatest passion, but I've also always been interested in history," he said.

"This course meant I didn't have to choose."

The flexibility of Essex's History and Drama degree was a major draw.

As one of the few universities offering the combined course, Essex stood out for giving students the freedom to tailor their studies and explore the subjects that interested them most.

Originally from Yorkshire, Dan has embraced every opportunity during his time at Essex, both inside and outside the classroom.

While studying, he became heavily involved in the University's Theatre Arts Society (TAS), eventually serving as President and helping lead one of the society's most ambitious and successful years.

"My favourite thing about my time at Essex has been being part of TAS," he said.

"It felt like being part of a big family full of other people who were just as passionate as I am about theatre."

Through the society, Dan was able to direct his own productions for the first time, helping to develop his confidence as a theatre-maker while supporting fellow students to bring their creative ideas to life.

Under his leadership, TAS continued to deliver an exciting programme of performances (list of perf), creating opportunities for students from across the University to get involved in theatre both on and off stage. Balancing his studies alongside rehearsals, productions and society commitments was not always easy.

"The biggest challenge I've faced here has been balancing my schedule between classes and assignments with all of the extra-curricular activities I've done," he explained.

Dan credits Professor Alison Rowlands from the Department of History as one of the biggest influences on his Essex experience.

"She always challenged us to understand history through different lenses and has consistently supported students both in and out of the classroom," he said.

"She has also come along to nearly every TAS show." Dan believes Essex's welcoming community is one of its greatest strengths.

"I would recommend Essex because it is such an open and supportive campus where being different is celebrated. Everyone belongs here."

After graduating this summer, Dan will continue his creative journey by studying an MA in Directing and Theatre Making at the Northern School of Art in Hartlepool.

Looking further ahead, he hopes to take his original productions around the country on the fringe festival circuit.

With a degree in hand, a wealth of creative experience and a growing portfolio of original work, Dan is already taking the next steps towards a career in theatre.
