Stay at home. Still feel part of something bigger.

If you’re thinking about commuting, the new 2026 Essex Commuter Offer is designed to help you belong - not just attend.

More students are choosing to live at home while they study. But if you’re commuting, most of what you hear is practical - how to get here, where to park, what to do next.

But what you really need? To know what your experience will actually feel like. Knowing how you're going to be supported in feeling part of campus life from the moment you arrive, with a better sense of belonging.

The brand new Essex Commuter Offer for 2026 has been designed to help you feel part of the university community and make it easier to engage with campus life.

We've also thrown in some practical new features - we're talking a shuttlebus from the train station, dedicated parking spaces for peace of mind, and much more.

Creating a feeling of belonging

You won't miss out - but only if the university is built for it (hint, we are)

When you’re thinking about commuting, the biggest question usually isn’t about travel. It’s: “Will I actually feel part of it?”

At Essex, the 2026 commuter offer is built to answer that, not just in theory, but in how your day actually feels. The best parts of university don’t just happen in lectures. They happen after class, and in moments you didn't plan.

That’s why commuting to Essex is designed to give you access to more - not less.

  • Dedicated commuter spaces: somewhere to go between lectures, with lockers to store your belongings, and quiet/flexible spaces for studying and getting downtime.
  • Commuter kitchens and shared areas: spaces where routines form and people connect, and most importantly, last night's dinner can get reheated.
  • Short-stay accommodation: want to crash overnight? Book an overnight stay on campus for those last minute plans you don't want to miss out on.
  • A growing commuter community:new commuter society for 2026 so you’re not doing this alone. Join society events throughout the year, designed around your lifestyle.
  • A dedicated Commuters' Hub: get the low down on events, news and support. Commuting doesn't mean compromising. You’re a part of life at Essex, no matter where you live.
  • Remote learning and academic support: access to library and study resources, lecture recordings, and wellbeing support, even when you’re not on campus.

So when timetables can leave you with big gaps between lectures, or you want to stay for an event at the SU, whatever it may be, at Essex, we make sure you've always got places to go. If you're ready to join us in October, there's only one thing left to do.

Commuting needs to work in real life, not just on paper

Let's get our practical heads on, because commuting to uni also has to work day to day.

Commuting can be a more cost-effective and flexible option for you, and your family.

That’s why the 2026 Essex commuter offer focuses on making travelling to campus simpler for you:

  • new for 2026!: a shuttle bus service from Colchester North Station, via the Hythe - guaranteed transport that will get you to your lecture on time.
  • train travel: If you're eligible, a 16–25 Railcard can save you up to a third on rail fares. Season tickets are also available from National Rail, which usually work out more cost-effective than purchasing single journeys
  • bus travel: First Essex offers a special season ticket price for University of Essex students
  • sustainable options: car share scheme amd EV charging points
  • on campus parking: flexible options including permits and pay-as-you-go, and dedicated parking spaces in the multi-story car park
  • for the cyclists: benefit from a fortnightly Dr Bike service in Colchester, offering free maintenance checks and discounted services and repairs.
  • E-scooters: available on our Colchester Campus, and you can benefit from a 50% discount through the TIER UK access scheme.

Can you picture your life here?

This isn’t just about your course. It’s about your everyday.

Arriving on campus and knowing where to go > seeing familiar faces between lectures > staying longer because you want to, not leaving because you have to.

Balancing your life at home with your life at university, that’s what the 2026 Essex commuter offer is designed to support.
