Following his term as Chief Human Rights Commissioner in New Zealand, Paul will draw from his recent publications and discuss the future of re-imagined human rights for our challenging times.

Paul Hunt

Paul joined the University of Essex in 2000. A national of Aotearoa New Zealand and the United Kingdom, he served on the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and was the first UN Special Rapporteur on the right to the highest attainable standard of health. He was senior human rights adviser to WHO Assistant Director-General Dr. Flavia Bustreo. Between 2019-24, Paul served as New Zealand’s Chief Human Rights Commissioner. He has lived, and undertaken human rights work, in Israel/Palestine, Africa, UK, and Aotearoa New Zealand. Awarded honorary doctorates in recognition of his scholarship, he has published extensively on human rights, especially economic, social and cultural rights. Presently, Paul is writing about human rights and colonialism.
