Essex Business School Welcome Week is your opportunity to meet key staff members and socialise with your fellow students.

Attendance is compulsory as you will receive crucial information to help you start your university experience. You will receive further information about your induction via your Essex email address nearer the time. Remember to check your email regularly for dates, times and details.

Your department induction is an essential part of Welcome WeekEssex Business School are running a range of events throughout Welcome Week 2024. See below for all events.

Come and find out more about your course, meet key members of staff, and meet the people you’re going to be studying with.

There are events open to all levels, and events which are specifically for first-year undergraduate students, postgraduate-taught students, and postgraduate research students.

Monday 30 September

10:00 - 16:00 Essex Business School Welcome Hub – A Home From Home Essex Business School Foyer (4th Floor, Gateway Building)
  • This is an optional event, but we would really encourage you to join us and meet your EBS Student Services Team who are here to support and guide you as you start your studies. Drop in for an informal chat anytime between 10am-4pm.
  • Celebrate our school’s internationalism by adding your pin to our EBS World in One Place Map and send a postcard home!

Self-directed session Getting Started With IT Online via Moodle
  • Do you know your LEAP from your FASER? Have you found your way around the various online systems we use at Essex?
  • This session will take you through the most commonly used systems and apps to get you started
  • Join us for this practical session to get you logged in, set up and ready for your studies.
  • You can bring your laptop and devices and set them up too!
  • You only need to attend once.

  • Find out everything about the Student Union and what's on offer in Southend
  • This is your opportunity to visit a number of stalls and find out more from your SU, how to get involved and how to join societies and what services and support is on offer from the university and local community

  • Find out how the team can support you with everything you need to do well in your studies, including what materials and resources are available to you along with workshops and other support.

11:15 - 13:10 Iconic Southend Trip Meet at the entrance to the Pier.
  • Take a trip down the World’s longest Pleasure Pier and enjoy a favourite seaside fare of fish and chips. There are a limited number of tickets so early booking is advised.

  • This is your opportunity to visit a number of stalls and find out more from your University.

  • This workshop will look at how circularity can be understood in relation to the 4 pillars of sustainability: the environmental, economic, social, and human, and the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

  • An introduction to the academic skills, services, and practices that you will need at the University of Essex. Delivered during the first weeks of your study at Essex, you will learn about the requirements of postgraduate study; the nature of academic writing and coursework; our expectations related to the appropriate use of academic sources; and gain experience using our digital learning platforms. Continued in weeks 2-4 and will be scheduled in your online timetable.

  • This conference facilitates the meeting of new students, Deans, and the Postgraduate Research Education Team, and is a platform for disseminating key information, plotting out the lifecycle of postgraduate research, and sharing of best practice at the start of your journey. This session looks to demystify PGR study and aims to enable you to have the best start to your time at Essex. We look forward to meeting you.
  • *Please note that this event will be held on the Colchester Campus. There are directions available to the Colchester Campus.
