Our research

Studying learning and development

At the University of Essex Babylab, we study how infants and young children learn and develop.

Our research aims to answer questions like:

  • How does the infant brain process social stimuli such as bodies and faces?
  • How do infants develop language and an understanding of the world?
  • How do infants learn about their own body?
  • How do infants learn to copy others?

Because babies cannot talk yet, we use indirect methods to find out what is going on inside their heads. Some examples of our studies can be found below.

Our areas of research

Becoming Social
We're researching how a baby's social brain develops, and does this change if we present information differently?
Me or You?
We want to understand when and how we start to realise that the face we see in front of a mirror is our face, or that the hand that is moving is our own.
Learning to Communicate
How does language develop in the first months of life, when talking is beyond our ability, but we know the names of the things around us?
From the womb to the world
From prenatal to postnatal, our research is looking at the impact of every stage of the parent-baby journey.
