World-class supervision

As a postgraduate research student in our school, you will be part of a large and active research community where students and staff work together in a creative and intellectually stimulating environment.

Your research will be supervised by a team of experts with an international reputation for being at the forefront of their fields. You will network with other researchers, professionals, and practitioners.

You will benefit from excellent training opportunities, regular visiting speakers as part of our seminar series, participation in our research groups, and a range of high-quality facilities, including a cinema and a theatre both located on campus. Students also have access to an industry-standard media suite, our new Speech Systems Lab featuring phonetic (sound-proof recording, speech aerodynamics) and psycholinguistic (eye-tracking, EEG) instruments, and our Interpreting Lab featuring UN-style interpreting booths and subtitling software.

Graduates from our research programmes have gone on to successful careers in sectors including academia, research institutes, the film and TV industry, the technology industry, publishing, and education, to name just some.

Her passion for preserving and promoting the indigenous languages of Ghana, and investigating how they are changing in the modern world, led Gertrude Grumah to study for a PhD in Sociolinguistics at the University of Essex.
