This programme aims to develop compassionate & inclusive senior leaders at all levels for local and international learners. It will equip senior leaders to tackle inequalities in services; become key decision-makers and to develop behaviours that will support a culture of learning. Graduates will be able to apply their skills and behaviours to a work setting and become central to setting and implementing change to address health inequalities, improve health and care services and embracing a collective responsibility for the sustainable use of resources.

Our overall philosophy is to develop leaders by focusing on the systems around the leader, the healthcare strategy and individual leadership skills. This will form the first half of the programme. The second half will focus on the practical application of the knowledge and skills; linking this to active research to inform leaders behaviours and strategies.

We welcome applications for our MSc Leadership in Health and Care from the UK and around the world. Our programme is on-campus only for 12 months full-time. No DBS is required to participate in this innovative programme.

As a School, we have purpose built facilities where you can meet to discuss your progress and ongoing work.

Our staff offer approachable support at all levels. Our university student support network can also offer you help with personal and study issues during your time with us.

You also have access to an excellent theatre and sports and social club experiences at Essex.

Entry requirements

UK entry requirements

We will consider applicants with a 2:2 honours degree, or international equivalent, in a medical, health, social care or social sciences discipline.

Applicants with a 3rd class degree, or a 2:2 degree in any other discipline, will be considered where they can demonstrate at least 1 year's relevant experience in the field of health policy and systems, or in the development sector working on health and care issues, or in a healthcare setting. This will be assessed based on information provided at the application stage (for example, in a CV, reference, or other proofs of employment).

English language requirements

IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum component score of 5.5

If you do not meet our IELTS requirements then you may be able to complete a pre-sessional English pathway that enables you to start your course without retaking IELTS.

Structure

Course structure

Our research-led teaching is continually evolving to address the latest challenges and breakthroughs in the field. The following modules are based on the current course structure and may change in response to new curriculum developments and innovation.

We understand that deciding where and what to study is a very important decision for you. We'll make all reasonable efforts to provide you with the courses, services and facilities as described on our website. However, if we need to make material changes, for example due to significant disruption, we'll let our applicants and students know as soon as possible.

Components and modules explained

Components

Components are the blocks of study that make up your course. A component may have a set module which you must study, or a number of modules from which you can choose.

Each component has a status and carries a certain number of credits towards your qualification.

Status	What this means
Core	You must take the set module for this component and you must pass. No failure can be permitted.
Core with Options	You can choose which module to study from the available options for this component but you must pass. No failure can be permitted.
Compulsory	You must take the set module for this component. There may be limited opportunities to continue on the course/be eligible for the qualification if you fail.
Compulsory with Options	You can choose which module to study from the available options for this component. There may be limited opportunities to continue on the course/be eligible for the qualification if you fail.
Optional	You can choose which module to study from the available options for this component. There may be limited opportunities to continue on the course/be eligible for the qualification if you fail.

The modules that are available for you to choose for each component will depend on several factors, including which modules you have chosen for other components, which modules you have completed in previous years of your course, and which term the module is taught in.

Modules

Modules are the individual units of study for your course. Each module has its own set of learning outcomes and assessment criteria and also carries a certain number of credits.

In most cases you will study one module per component, but in some cases you may need to study more than one module. For example, a 30-credit component may comprise of either one 30-credit module, or two 15-credit modules, depending on the options available.

Modules may be taught at different times of the year and by a different department or school to the one your course is primarily based in. You can find this information from the module code. For example, the module code HR100-4-FY means:

The UK academic level of the module.

A standard undergraduate course will comprise of level 4, 5 and 6 modules - increasing as you progress through the course.

A standard postgraduate taught course will comprise of level 7 modules.

COMPONENT 01: CORE

Dissertation

(60 CREDITS)

This final module consolidates your learning and equips you to take your career forward with a range of skills and knowledge relevant to your professional practice. It is an opportunity to undertake an independent research project relevant to your field of practice. You will formulate a research question, plan and carry out the project, analyse and write up the results. You can undertake primary or secondary research, or audit/service evaluation or a library based critical literature review research project. If you are undertaking the MSc in Health Research you will undertake a primary or secondary research project, engaging with empirical data.

COMPONENT 02: CORE

Strategic Management and Senior Leadership in Health and Social Care

(30 CREDITS)

The module will cover traditional approaches to leadership, the differences between management and leadership, current issues, including leading change, and critical issues in leadership from a theoretical and practical perspective. At the end of the module, students will have developed a critical appreciation of leadership and be able to relate this to their work context.

COMPONENT 03: CORE

Innovation and Change Management in Health and Social Care

(15 CREDITS)

This module will encourage you to experience, think and reflect upon the nature of change, creativity and innovation within health and social care organisations. The module provides you with an advanced understanding of change in organisations where creativity and innovation emerge as a key challenge or represent a necessity. A variety of examples will be used but you will be expected to consider the application of creativity, change and innovation management in the context of health and social care organisations.

COMPONENT 04: CORE

Leadership in Health and Social Care

(15 CREDITS)

The aim of this module is to provide you with the theoretical basis of leadership as applied to practice, which supports health and social care organisations in meeting the needs of patients and service users. This course is suitable for health and social care practitioners including nurses, allied health professionals, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and, speech and language therapists and other health professions, as well as social care staff working in relevant roles.

COMPONENT 05: CORE

Literature Review and Critical Appraisal

(15 CREDITS)

This module provides you with an advanced understanding of the research study designs commonly used in health research. It combines a theoretical and a practical approach to enable you to search for, obtain, and understand the research literature, and provides you with the critical skills to analyse and synthesize material into a literature review.

COMPONENT 06: CORE

Data Collection, Analysis and Interpretation

(15 CREDITS)

This module provides you with a range of techniques for collecting, analysing and interpreting data. It combines a theoretical and a practical approach to enable you to understand the collection and analysis process. At the end of the module, you will be able to design and pilot data collection instruments, conduct quantitative and qualitative data analysis using appropriate computer software, and interpret statistical and qualitative research findings. COMPONENT 07: OPTIONAL

(30 CREDITS)

Teaching

On this programme, you can expect to have approximately 16 taught hours per week across all three terms. Teaching takes place every day, Monday to Friday, but this can vary, and either Monday or Wednesday will be free depending on the optional modules that you choose. In the Summer term, there are fewer contact hours so you can spend more time working on your dissertation.
