I hope you’re all doing well whether you are newer to Essex or have been part of our Southend family for a while or based in Colchester.

One of the best things about being part of the University of Essex is how diverse and welcoming our community is. With students from over 140 nationalities and 30+ cultures, there’s so much to learn from one another. It’s what makes Essex such a vibrant and inspiring place to study, work, and grow.

As your Vice President Southend, I want to take a moment to talk about something that’s important to me which is to make sure our community is safe, inclusive, and respectful for everyone.

Respect and belonging

Here at Essex, we have a zero-tolerance approach to bullying, harassment, hate incidents, and sexual violence. Everyone …. students, staff, and visitors deserve to feel safe, respected, and valued.

When you joined the University, you agreed to follow the Code of Student Conduct. It’s there to help protect that sense of belonging and fairness we all want to see. In line with our Student Charter, we all share the responsibility to treat others with dignity, speak up when something isn’t right, and help build a community that reflects the best of who we are.

Speaking up when it matters

Sometimes, it can be hard to know what to do if you’ve seen or experienced behaviour that doesn’t feel okay. The good news is you’re not on your own.

The University’s Report + Support platform is there for exactly that reason. It’s a safe space where you can:

  • Contact an adviser to get confidential advice and support, or
  • Report anonymously if you’re not comfortable sharing your details.

You can use it to report (or talk about) anything that goes against our community values like bullying, harassment, hate incidents, or sexual violence whether it’s something that’s happened to you or something you’ve witnessed.

New: Two-way anonymous messaging

There’s also a new feature on the platform that I think is a huge step forward: two-way anonymous messaging. This lets you stay in touch with the University after you’ve made an anonymous report, without revealing who you are. It means you can still ask questions, get updates, or get advice safely and privately.

Here’s how it works:

  • After you make a report, you’ll receive a 16-character access code. Keep it safe, you’ll need it to log back in later.
  • You can then message back and forth with the University team, completely anonymously.
  • You never have to share your personal details unless you want to.

It’s a simple way to make sure people can still get the support they need, even if they want to stay private.

We’re here for you

At the Students’ Union, we want every student to feel supported, seen, and heard. Our SU Advice team offers free, confidential, and totally non-judgmental support whether you’re struggling, unsure what to do next, or just need someone to listen.

If something doesn’t feel right, please don’t stay silent. Whether it’s through Report + Support, SU Advice, or a chat with me directly reach out. We all have a role to play in keeping our community safe and kind.

Let’s keep looking out for one another and make our campus environment in Southend and Colchester a place where everyone feels they belong.
