This blog reflects on how Erikson made the most of what EBS has to offer, and how those experiences helped him find his path forward

Finding my path at Essex Business School: Opportunities, growth and independence

When I look back at my time at Essex Business School, I realise how many opportunities there were to grow, not just academically, but personally and professionally too. While I didn’t make use of every facility as much as I could have, I’ve come to really appreciate the resources and spaces available to students here.

The Bloomberg Suite – An underrated gem

One of the standout facilities at EBS is the Bloomberg Suite. Talking with peers at Essex, I realised many weren’t aware that this same opportunity exists here, and that EBS actively supports students who want to gain this certification. The Bloomberg Market Concepts (BMC) course gives you hands-on experience with financial data and analysis, skills that are highly valued in the world of finance and beyond. For me, learning these tools and understanding how the markets operate made a real difference when applying for jobs. It’s something I’d encourage every EBS student to explore.

A space for independence and community

One of my favourite things about EBS is the sense of independence it offers students. The seminar rooms became my go-to space, not just for learning, but for working on projects, revising between semesters, and even socialising with friends. Some of my best memories were made here, from collaborative study sessions to relaxing afterwards with a bit of miniature painting!

It’s that combination of focused study and supportive community that really makes Essex special.

Looking ahead

What also helped me prepare for the working world were the extracurricular clubs and experiences I got involved with alongside my studies. These opportunities helped me build practical skills, meet new people, and develop confidence, all of which made a huge difference when it came to securing a graduate role.

Now that I’ve begun my journey at Deloitte, I’d love to give back by sharing what I’ve learned — from navigating applications to making the most of university opportunities. Having a mentor or guide during this time would have made such a difference to me, and I’d be thrilled to help others along that path. EBS gives students the tools, spaces, and community to succeed; the key is knowing what’s available and making the most of it.
