Highlights

IPHW Honorary Professors

We recently announced two Honorary Professorships at the IPHW. The appointment of Lucy Wightman, Chief Executive Officer and Chief Nurse at Provide Health, and Dr Ed Garratt OBE, Chief Executive of the NHS Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care Board, will help ensure Essex research is grounded in the context of real-world healthcare, and cements links with two key regional stakeholders.

Centre for Global Health and Intersectional Equity Research

We are delighted to welcome the Centre for Global Health and Intersectional Equity Research to the IPHW family. The CGHIER will help academics and health professionals tackle global health challenges, and will ensure policy makers and health professionals have access to the latest research, tools, methods and data that can help protect the world’s most vulnerable people.

PhD Studentship opportunity

The Centre for Coastal Communities is currently advertising a PhD studentship jointly with ISER. Starting October 2024, this studentship will look at differences in young people’s mental health between coastal & inland areas. Applications close on 23rd June 2024

Health, Wellbeing and Care Hub

The IPHW is enjoying its new home in the new Clingoe House building on the University’s Knowledge Gateway. We share the ground floor with the ground-breaking Health, Wellbeing & Care Hub, which was officially opened last month. The Hub will be an amazing resource for the community, local partners & the University, and will revolutionise how we deliver services with partners, approach research and offer transformational learning experiences to our students.

Hot desks!

In the IPHW's new Clingoe House offices, there are a number of desks avaiable for researchers from across the University. Colleagues working on health and wellbeing related topics are welcome to book a space to work with us. If you would be interested in this, please contact the IPHW (institutepublichealthwellbeing@essex.ac.uk) to discuss it further

Research and publications

Rising risk of heart disease caused by air pollution

The 2024 World Heart Report, which was co-led by researchers from the Institute of Public Health and Wellbeing, shows deaths from cardiovascular conditions caused by air pollution have been rising for a decade and will continue to rise.

Funding extended for research on mental health inequalities

The NIHR grant for Using Understanding Society to examine Mental Health Inequalities in the East of England was recently renewed for a further 18 months, enabling the team of researchers from across the University to continue this important work.

The project aims to find out if there are people living in the East of England who are more likely to experience mental health or care inequalities.

Mental health blog

Susan McPherson and Claire Wicks recently published a blog on long term failures in UK mental health policy, highlighting inadequacies in mental health care provision and inequalities in access to mental health support.

Research on young people in deprived coastal areas

Emily Murray, Director of the Centre for Coastal Communities, has recently published a paper showing young people living in deprived coastal areas are likely to become unhealthier young adults than those living in deprived inland communities. This highlights the importance of further research into tackling inequalities in coastal areas.
